Sean Dietrich Bio and Career:
Sean Dietrich, a longtime resident of Destin and a favorite of Destin Life, is a traveling storyteller, podcaster, and Southern Living writer known for his daily column filled with tales of steel workers, church potlucks, and faithful bloodhounds. He is sometimes better known by the nickname “Sean of the South.” His written words give his readers a cause to think that there is good in the world, even though they may have had experiences leading them to the opposite conclusion.
He used to like writing when he was a kid. He filled journals with stories of the high seas, shameless vixens, and hot situations that combined the aspects of his life. The teacher of his fifth-grade class came upon one of his notebooks and looked through it. Sean recalls, “She told me I wrote with too many commas and advised me to seek a career in construction work.” “She told me I wrote with too many commas” That elderly lady has never shown any interest in me.
“I didn’t find that my instructor had left the school until many years later. She worked as a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly after getting a job there. Sean says, “I went to see the elderly girl to show her the man that I’d grown into.” “I could see that she was overjoyed to see me. And I was ecstatic to discover that she worked in an environment that required her to wear that bright red apron. After looking around for a little while, I spotted something that had previously escaped my attention.
The unassuming woman who toiled away from nine to five for a few nickels and dimes lay dormant under her tough façade. She was making the most of her situation in life to the best of her ability, just like me. Just before I departed, she inquired about the line of employment that I was in. “At the time, I was employed in the construction industry,” explains Sean. Sean is an author, journalist, and podcast presenter recognized for his observations on life in the American South. His focus is mainly on the South. Longtime readers are quite acquainted with Sean’s monthly piece in Bay Life, which is described as pure, honest, and genuine.
In addition to these publications, his work has been featured in Newsweek, Southern Living, Garden and Gun, The Tallahassee Democrat, Good Grit, South Magazine, Alabama Living, the Birmingham News, The Bitter Southerner, Thom Magazine, and The Mobile Press-Register. His work has also been translated into Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to being the originator of the Sean of the South Podcast, he is the author of eleven novels. Recently, Sean published a thoughtful blog entry titled “Second Chances,” in which he discussed his time spent studying at what is now known as Northwest Florida State College.
The Against the Odds Award Recipient in 2018, he was a distinguished alumni winner, which is fitting for this popular and well-known writer and storyteller who has certainly beaten the odds…and overcome the words of his 5th-grade teacher. He graduated in the Class of 2012, and in 2018 he was named the recipient of the Against the Odds Award. A defining moment in his life was when he was in his creative writing class at Okaloosa-Walton College on a Saturday morning when something life-changing occurred. The instructor informed Sean that she had a special place in her heart for him. Before that point, I had never been anyone’s favorite version of anything.
The fact is that I was a miserable child trapped within the body of an adult. In addition to that, these teachers had faith in me. A literary professor of mine once referred to me as “clever.” I was told that I was “going someplace” by Professor Domulot. My English instructor once told me, “I believe you may become a writer in the future.” I can pinpoint the day she made the statement in my memory. After class, I was so close to shedding a tear. Will the Circle Be Unbroken? : A Memoir of Learning to Believe You’re Going to Be Okay was the title of his book that was released the year before. This is the point in the book where Sean shares his narrative for the first time. It has been defined by both sorrow and love and has led him on a road that few would have predicted for him.

Sean Dietrich’s Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:
When Sean dispersed his father’s ashes from a mountain range, he was only 12 years old at the time. His father had been a guy who devoted his whole life to baseball. He worked in the steel industry and had a ready wink. Once, he climbed up a tree that was fifty feet tall merely to hang a tire swing for his kid. But he was also the stranger who attempted to abduct and murder Sean’s mother before turning the gun on himself. Before he shot himself, he pulled the trigger. He had been a hero to him since boyhood, but now he was just a guy in a box.
Following the passing of Sean’s father, Sean left school in the seventh grade. He worked as a dishwasher, a newspaper carrier, and eventually, as a construction worker to support his mother and sister. Even though Sean considered himself “a nobody with a horrible background behind him,” he could not reject the fact that there were positive aspects to life. It became even more difficult to deny such goodness after he met the love of his life, Jamie, at a fried chicken church potluck. It became even more difficult to deny such goodness after his lifelong passion for storytelling led him to stages across the country, where he is now known and loved as “Sean of the South.”
Dietrich began writing his blog, Sean of the South, ten years ago. Sean of the South has daily observations about life and is published in publications throughout the area. He is the author of 13 volumes, some of which are novels, while others are compilations of the roughly 3,000 articles he has written throughout his career. He has a strong following, and most recently, he served as the pitchman for Alfa insurance on television.
This last week, when I was in town, a woman approached me and said, “What do you do?” Dietrich says. “When you originally asked me, my response was, ‘About what?’ After that, I attempted to explain this multi-headed monster I am a part of. I describe myself as a writer and an okay fisherman in everyday conversation. Some people consider me a full-time storyteller, but that’s not the kind of job description that’s often covered in high school. It seems strange to call myself a writer, given that I have never taken any writing classes and have no prior writing experience. I am at a loss for what to do. I honestly don’t have any idea.”
Dietrich’s youth, which he describes as “not so nice,” prompted him to read extensively; nonetheless, he did not write when he was younger. He used reading as an escape. Columnists, such as Lewis Grizzard, Erma Bombeck, and Mike Royko, were among his favorite types of writers. Dietrich is also a musician, and it was when he played the piano at a Baptist church in Destin he became acquainted with Jamie. She was born and raised in Brewton, with a degree in culinary arts, and is qualified to teach mathematics, and she has been Sean’s girlfriend for the last 18 years.
They will take their bloodhound, Thelma Lou, their “alleged” Labrador, Otis Campbell, and their two wild cats, Linus and Lulabell, with them when they relocate to the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham. Regarding the relocation, he explains, “We have a lot of relatives there, as well as a lot of friends.” “Ever since we began our journey, it seemed that we were destined to arrive at Birmingham. We realized that we were staying there for extended periods and fell deeply in love with the place.
