When Ruby Bridges was just six years old, in November of 1960, she became the first African American student to enroll in a segregated Southern elementary school. The civil rights movement made great strides forward with this. Both Lucille and Abon Bridges were farmers in Tylertown, Mississippi, and the eldest of their five children was Bridges. On September 8th, 1954, he entered this world. In search of greater job opportunities, Ruby’s family uprooted and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, when she was just two years old. A federal court forced Louisiana to desegregate its schools a year later. Students of African descent were required to take standardized tests created by the school system to prove their academic readiness for enrollment at the all-white school. Ruby, along with the other five students, did well enough on the exam to pass. Her parents were on the fence about whether to enroll her in the predominantly white William Frantz Elementary School, which was only a few blocks away from their home.
Although Ruby’s mother strongly supported her daughter’s participation in the educational opportunities that she and her parents had been denied, Ruby’s father was strongly opposed to the concept out of worry for his daughter’s safety. Meanwhile, schedule issues meant that the school wouldn’t let her enroll until November 14. Two of the students opted to stay at their existing school, while the other three were transferred to McDonough Elementary School, which enrolled primarily white students.
Throughout that academic year, four federal marshals escorted Ruby and her mother on each and every one of their school trips. She pushed through crowds of people who jeered and hurled insults at her. She said coolly, “The only time I’ve ever been scared is when I saw a woman holding a black baby doll inside a coffin.”
She began her first day on the job in the principal’s office, where she would remain for the duration of the day as a result of the chaos generated by angry white parents pulling their children out of class. Some parents who are adamant about maintaining segregation decided to pull their kids out of the school for good. Since Ruby’s only willing teacher was Barbara Henry, a white Bostonian, Ruby spent the entire school year as the only pupil in the classroom.
