His stand-up performance often consists of a combination of comic routines and original songs. Carrington handles the lead vocals and guitar for the majority of his tunes, which are played in a style of country music that is neotraditional in nature. Carrington was also a star in the ABC comedy Rodney and the movie Beer for My Horses, both of which came out in 2008.
Rodney Carrington was born in the year 1968 in the city of Longview, Texas, and remained a resident there until the year 1990. He performed stand-up comedy at a variety of local venues and gained popularity via appearances on radio shows including “The Bob and Tom Show.”
Awards:
The first studio album by Carrington, titled Hangin’ with Rodney, was released by Mercury Records Nashville in the year 1998. This album reached its highest position on the Top Country Albums list at number 73. It had both stand-up comedy and original music, and it includes a song titled “Letter to My Penis,” which did not chart.
He made the move to Capitol Nashville to record his second album, Morning Wood, in the year 2000. It was his first album to be certified gold and it propelled him to the top of the singles charts for the first time with “More of a Man,” which peaked at number 71 on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks list.
It was also his first album to crack the Top 20 on the US Country charts (now Hot Country Songs). After that, the band released another live album called Live: C’mon Laugh You Bastards, but it was unsuccessful on the charts. Nut Sack was Carrington’s third album to be released under Capitol, and it was released in 2003.
It was mostly comprised of comedic songs that were recorded in a studio, and there were only five stand-up routines included. It included the track “Don’t Look Now,” which peaked at position No. 60 on the Billboard chart.
After that, in 2004, a compilation of their greatest hits was released. This album had stand-up routines on one disc and songs on the second disc, and it was made of choices from his Capitol records. It also contained two songs that had never been published before: “Put Your Clothes Back On” and “Things We Didn’t Know,” which was his first song that was not a comedic number.
This compilation album is Carrington’s first recording to be recognized as having achieved the status of Platinum. It debuted at position No. 3 on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart and at position No. 11.
Carrington made his debut in the acting world the same year, 2004, in the comedy Rodney, which was primarily based on his real life and was shown on ABC for two seasons. In 2007, he published the book titled King of the Mountains. King of the Mountains achieved the highest-ever peak position for any of his recordings, reaching No. 68 on the US Billboard 200 pop albums chart.
In addition to reaching No. 2 on the US Comedy Albums chart and No. 15 on the US Country chart, King of the Mountains also reached No. 2 on the US Country chart. His second solemn song, “Angel Buddy,” can be found on the album King of the Mountains. It is a memorial to his closest friend Barry Martin, who passed away unexpectedly in 2003.
In the film Beer for My Horses, which was released in 2008, he had an appearance with Toby Keith.
In 2009, Carrington released his sixth studio album under his own name titled El Nio Loco. It was his last release for Capitol Records, and it was this album. El Nio Loco is different from his other albums in that it does not include any stand-up sketches. In addition to that, he has his third song which is not a comedy, titled “Funny Man.” Make It Christmas was Carrington’s first-holiday album, which was released later that same year (2009).
In December of 2009, “Camouflage and Christmas Lights,” the album’s first single, became his first Top 40 country success. The song is a serious homage to troops who are stationed overseas and is named “Camouflage and Christmas Lights.”
Laughter’s Good (2014) and Here Comes the Truth (2015) are two further comedy CDs that Carrington has published under the indie company Laughter’s Good Records (2017). In the meantime, he also issued a collection of comedic songs under the moniker Rodney Carrington: The Hits, which was published as an album (2015). As of the year 2022, he is still performing live.
