Richard Curtis Bio and Career:
Richard Whalley Anthony Curtis CBE is a British screenwriter, producer, and film director. He was born on November 8th, 1956 in the United Kingdom. The city of Wellington in New Zealand is where Curtis was born. It should be noted that he is Glyness S.’s son. along with Anthony J. Curtis.
His father was a Czechoslovak immigrant who fled to Australia when he was thirteen years old and eventually worked his way up the Unilever corporate ladder. When Curtis was 11 years old, his family relocated to the United Kingdom from a number of various nations that they had resided in throughout his youth. These locations included Sweden and the Philippines.
Papplewick School is located in Ascot, Berkshire, and Curtis went there (as did his younger brother Jamie). During a brief while in the 1970s, he made his home in Warrington, Cheshire, and it was there that he received his education at Appleton Grammar School (now Bridgewater High School). After that, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Harrow School, where he became a member of the editorial staff of The Harrovian, the weekly school magazine. He claims that it was at Harrow School that he “acquired all of the abilities that made me a sketch writer.”
During his time at Harrow, Curtis produced a school production of Joe Orton’s play The Erpingham Camp; this contentious decision was granted the ‘green light’ by his classics instructor, James Morwood. I wrote reviews, comment pieces, and hilarious articles where I’d attempt to create something out of nothing.” Later on, Curtis said that Morwood’s encouragement had helped him comprehend that it was OK “to push limits and to be amusing.” Curtis did not agree of fagging being done at the school, and at the age of 18, when he became head of his house, he prohibited it.
At Christ Church, Oxford, he earned the highest possible grade in the Bachelor of Arts programme in English Language and Literature. Rowan Atkinson was one of the first people he worked with while they were both students at the University of Oxford. They had both joined the scriptwriting team of the Etceteras revue, which was a component of the Experimental Theatre Club. In May of 1976, he was seen in the production of “After Eights” by the company at the Oxford Playhouse.
After working with Rowan Atkinson at the Oxford Revue, he performed in the same show as him during his breakout performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. As a consequence of this, he received a commission in 1978 from BBC Radio 3 to co-write the series The Atkinson People alongside Atkinson. This series was eventually aired in 1979. After that, he started his career as a comedic writer for cinema and television.

He was a regular writer on the BBC comedy series Not the Nine O’Clock News, where he created many of the show’s songs together with Howard Goodall and a large number of sarcastic sketches, sometimes in collaboration with Rowan Atkinson. He also wrote many of the show’s songs. In 1980, Curtis and Philip Pope collaborated on the song “Meaningless Songs (In Very High Voices),” which was a spoof of the sound of a number of disco successes by the Bee Gees. The song was released as a single by the Hee Bee Gee Bees. During the years 1984 and 1985, Curtis contributed writing to the satirical puppet programme Spitting Image that was shown on ITV.
After collaborating first with Atkinson and subsequently with Ben Elton, Curtis went on to write the Blackadder series, which ran from 1983 to 1989. Each season of the show focused on a particular period in the history of the United Kingdom. While Atkinson was the only actor to portray the main role throughout, Curtis was the only member of the writing staff to appear in each and every episode of Blackadder. The two actors continued working together in the comic series Mr. Bean, which aired on television from 1990 to 1995.
By that time, Curtis had already started writing scripts for feature films. His first picture, “The Tall Guy,” was a romantic comedy released in 1989 and produced by Working Title films. The film starred Jeff Goldblum, Emma Thompson, and Rowan Atkinson. After that, in 1991, there was the television film Bernard and the Genie.
In 1994, Curtis conceived and co-wrote the comedy series The Vicar of Dibley for Dawn French, which went on to become an enormous hit. It was voted the third-best sitcom in British history in an online poll that was conducted in 2004 called Britain’s Best Sitcom, and Blackadder was voted the second-best. This makes Curtis the only screenwriter to create two shows that are ranked among the top 10 programmes in the poll that was conducted.
