The Pittsburgh Steelers are a National Football League (NFL) gridiron football team headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (NFL). The Steelers are six-time Super Bowl champions and eight-time AFC champions. Known as one of the best teams in the NFL, the Steelers have won more championships than any other team. Pittsburgh native Art Rooney, who used money he won from a bet on a horse race to start the team in 1933, originally called them the Pirates of Pittsburgh. To this day, ownership of the team is still in the Rooney family.

The squad had a rocky start, only making the playoffs once in its first 37 years of existence. In honour of Pittsburgh’s principal industry, the team adopted the nickname “Steelers” in 1940. Even though the Steelers finished second in the Eastern Division that year, they were blanked 21–0 by the Philadelphia Eagles in a playoff game to miss out on a spot in the NFL title game. Coach Chuck Noll’s arrival in Pittsburgh in 1969 marked the beginning of the Steelers’ comeback after years of mediocrity under Rooney’s guidance.

During the years of 1969 to 1972, Noll showed off his incredible talent for spotting talent by drafting five future Hall of Famers: defensive tackle “Mean” Joe Greene, quarterback Terry Bradshaw, defensive back Mel Blount, linebacker Jack Ham, and running back Franco Harris (remembered for his “Immaculate Reception,” a game-winning catch in 1972 playoffs against the Oakland Raiders that was one of the most remarkable and controversial plays in professional football history)

A further four players were chosen by Noll in 1974: centre Mike Webster, receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, and linebacker Jack Lambert. All four were subsequently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With the help of a dominant defence known as the “Steel Curtain” and an efficient offence headed by Terry Bradshaw, these players went on to build an unsurpassed Super Bowl-winning dynasty in six seasons (1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980).

The Steelers’ 1970s teams had a passionate fan following that was known for waving bright yellow “Terrible Towels” at home games, which were designed by the team’s popular and eccentric radio announcer for 35 years, Myron Cope. In the 1980s, the Penguins had a minor resurgence, making four postseason appearances during the decade, before Noll announced his retirement in 1991.

About (Pittsburgh Steelers– Biography)

Bill Cowher, who led the Steelers to the playoffs 10 times in his 15 seasons as head coach after Noll was fired, took Noll’s place. Cowher’s ascension of defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau from secondary coach to that post in 1995 was a key personnel move, as LeBeau put together excellent defences throughout his two periods as the Steelers’ coordinator (1995–97, 2004–15). Stars like future Hall of Fame cornerback Rod Woodson and linebackers Greg Lloyd and Kevin Greene highlighted the Steelers’ defence in the mid-1990s.

In 1996, the Steelers made it all the way to the NFL championship game before falling to the Dallas Cowboys. With a team led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Hines Ward, and safety Troy Polamalu, the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl in 2006, defeating the Seattle Seahawks. The Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl title in 2009 after a thrilling comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals, led by second-year head coach Mike Tomlin.

After missing the playoffs in 2009, the Steelers won the AFC North title in 2011 and advanced to the Super Bowl XLV, where they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers. After missing the postseason in both 2011 and 2014, the Steelers made the playoffs both years but fell short in the first round each time. The Steelers made the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 season but were knocked out in the divisional round by the Denver Broncos.

The following year, the Steelers finished with an 11-5 record and made it to the AFC championship game, where they fell to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for the third time in four years. In 2017, the Steelers matched for the most wins in the NFL with three other teams, going 13-4 during the regular season. The Steelers, on the other hand, were beaten in their first playoff game. The squad finished the season with a record of 9–6–1, despite several high-profile public spats involving some of its greatest players, and missed the playoffs for the first time in five years.
