Petros Sampras was born on August 12, 1971, in Washington, D.C., to a family of Greek descent. He is the third child of Soterios “Sammy” Sampras and Georgia Sampras, and the youngest of their three children. In addition to his mother’s emigration from Sparta, Greece, his father was born in the United States of a Greek father, Costas “Gus” Sampras, and a Polish-Jewish mother, Sarah Steinberg, both of whom were raised in the United States. On Sundays, he attended the normal services of the Greek Orthodox Church in his hometown. He discovered a tennis racket in the basement of his house when he was three years old and spent hours banging tennis balls against the wall.
It wasn’t until 1978 that the Sampras family relocated to Palos Verdes, California, where a warmer environment permitted the seven-year-old Sampras to participate in tennis throughout most of the year. Rod Laver was Sampras’s idol from an early age, and when he was 11 years old, he had the opportunity to meet and play tennis with the legend. The Sampras family became members of the Jack Kramer Club, and it was during this time that Sampras’s abilities were first recognized.
Sampras began training with tennis coach Robert Lansdorp when he was a youngster. In fact, he used the identical forehand he acquired from Lansdorp throughout the rest of his professional tennis career. The goal was to put an emphasis on driving into the ball rather than hitting excessive topspin as much as possible. Doctor Peter Fischer, a doctor and tennis aficionado recognized him and began coaching him in 1985, and he continued to train him until 1989. Fischer was in charge of transforming Sampras’s double-handed backhand to a single-handed backhand in order to be better prepared for the Wimbledon championships the following year.
He was born in the United States to a Greek father and a Jewish mother, whereas his mother was born in Greece and his father was born in the United States to a Greek father and a Jewish mother. His older sister, Stella Sampras Webster, is the head coach of the women’s tennis team at UCLA, and his younger sister, Marion, is a teacher in the Los Angeles public school system. Gus, his older brother, served as tournament director for the ATP event in Scottsdale this year. In 2007, he was promoted to the position of president of the company that manages Pete’s business activities.
Bridgette Wilson, an American actress, and former Miss Teen USA were married to Sampras on September 30, 2000, in Los Angeles. Christian Charles Sampras, their son, was born on November 21, 2002, in Los Angeles. Ryan Nikolaos Sampras, the couple’s second son, was born on July 29, 2005, in New York City. They currently reside in the California town of Lake Sherwood. Sampras suffers from -thalassemia minor, a hereditary condition that can cause mild anemia in some people. Sampras is a Republican in his political affiliation. In the presidential election of 2008, he backed John McCain.

Sein’s professional tennis career began in 1988 and came to a close at the 2002 US Open, which he won by defeating longtime adversary Andre Agassi in the championship match. With 14 major singles victories during his career, which was an all-time record at the time of his retirement, Sampras set the standard for the sport. He won seven Wimbledon crowns, two Australian Opens, and a joint Open Era-record-tying five US Open titles. In total, he won 64 singles titles during his career.
He first achieved the world No. 1 ranking in 1993, and he maintained that position for a total of 286 weeks (tied for third all-time), including an Open Era record of six consecutive year-end No. 1 rankings from 1993 to 1998, which he achieved in 1993. Right-handed with a single-handed backhand, he gained the moniker “Pistol Pete” for his precise and powerful serve, which he used on the court. In 2007, he became the first American to be admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Sampras was a versatile player who was known for his ability to serve and volley. Because of his all-around ability, when he wasn’t serving, his approach was to be offensive from the baseline, put opponents in a defensive posture, and finish points at the net in the early years of his career. He developed a stronger sense of offense in the later half of his career, adopting methods such as chipping and charging or attempting to strike an attacking shot on the return and immediately following his return to the net.
He had an accurate and powerful first serve that was widely regarded as one of the best in the history of the sport by players, analysts, and fans alike. He possessed excellent concealment on both his first and second serves and his second serve was nearly as potent as his first serve in terms of force. He was well-known for generating aces on crucial points, even with his second serves, and he continued this tradition. With his forehand and backhand, Sampras was able to slam winners into the net from every part of the court.
Through the use of his speed and a forehand stroke on the run, he was able to catch attacks that were wide to his forehand and return them. Due to the significant pace and flat style of the shot, he was able to win numerous points outright or force opponents to go on the defense quickly when he executed it well on the court. In the opinion of some observers, this technique did not serve him well on clay courts.
Sampras only ever played with one type of tennis racket, the Wilson Pro Staff Original. As a post-retirement weapon, Sampras has employed a slightly modified Pro Staff Tour 90 and since 2008, a new version of the original Pro Staff, which has an in-between head size of 88 square inches and is heavier in weight at 349 grammes unstrung, to replace his original Pro Staff.
