Patricia Cornwell Bio and Career:
American mystery novelist Patricia Cornwell was born Patricia Carroll Daniels on June 9, 1956. She is well-known for her bestselling books about the medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, the first of which was motivated by a flurry of dramatic killings that occurred in Richmond, Virginia, the setting for most of the tales. The stories are famous for their focus on forensic science, which has affected how police work has been portrayed in subsequent TV shows. Additionally, Cornwell has started fresh investigations into the Jack the Ripper murders that accuse well-known British artist Walter Sickert. Over one hundred million copies of her novels have been sold. The second of Marilyn and Sam Daniels’ three children and a direct descendant of abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe, Cornwell was born on June 9, 1956, in Miami, Florida.
Her father was one of the top appellate attorneys in the country and worked as Hugo Black’s law clerk on the Supreme Court. Later in life, Cornwell attributed her own motives to the emotional abuse she claims to have experienced at the hands of her father, who abandoned the family on Christmas Day 1961. She said, “On his deathbed, he was. He held my brother’s hand and mouthed “I love you,” but he never touched me, even though we both knew it was the final time we would see each other. On a legal pad, he simply wrote, “How’s work?” Cornwell started working as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer in 1979, first editing TV listings before switching to features and eventually reporting crime.
She won the Investigative Reporting Award from the North Carolina Press Association in 1980 for a prostitution-related series. She was employed by the newspaper until 1981, at which point she and her first husband, Charles Cornwell (married in 1980), who had enrolled at the Union Theological Seminary, relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The biography of Ruth Bell Graham, A Time for Remembering: The Ruth Bell Graham Story, which was published in 1983 under the title Ruth, A Portrait: The Story of Ruth Bell Graham, was started by the author the same year. The Evangelic Christian Publishers Association honored the biography with a Gold Medallion Book Award in 1985.
But it was also a serious blow to her relationship with Graham; they didn’t talk for eight years after the book’s release. The forensic sciences are covered in considerable depth in the Scarpetta books. Although Scarpetta engages in a great deal more on-the-ground research and confrontation with suspects than actual medical examiners, the forensic examination of the murder victim’s body provides the first explanation for the case. The action sequences that serve as the book’s conclusion often include Scarpetta and her friends facing off against the murderer or killers and ending with the perpetrator’s demise.
The forensics-focused TV shows CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Cold Case Files, both fictitious and documentary, are said to have been inspired by the books. In an ongoing, independently funded investigation, Cornwell has sought proof that painter Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper. She authored Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper—Case Closed, which was released in 2002 and sparked a great deal of debate, particularly among Ripperologists and in the British art community. In full-page advertisements in two British newspapers, Cornwell denied having a fascination with Jack the Ripper and said the case was “far from closed.”
In an effort to identify the Ripper, Cornwell apparently destroyed one of Sickert’s paintings in 2001. She said that over thirty of the well-known painter’s works closely mirrored the crime scenes from the Jack the Ripper murders and that this made him the likely suspect in the spate of killings. A breakthrough was also touted by Cornwell: a letter purportedly written by the murderer had a watermark with some of Sickert’s writing material. However, according to experts on Jack the Ripper, there were hundreds of letters sent by various writers falsely claiming to be the murderer, and the watermark in the issue was on a popular kind of stationery.
In 1961, Marilyn relocated to Montreat, North Carolina, along with her three children. The errant family was taken in by Ruth Bell Graham, the wife of Billy Graham, an evangelist. She then made arrangements for Cornwell and her brothers Jim and John to be reared by Lenore and Manfred Saunders, who had just returned from Africa. Marilyn Daniels was admitted to the hospital because of her acute depression.
Ruth Bell Graham was the authoritative figure Cornwell looked to, and it was she who recognized Cornwell’s writing aptitude and supported her literary endeavors. Bright student, accomplished cartoonist, and gifted tennis player, Cornwell spent a short time at King College in Bristol, Tennessee before moving to Davidson College on a tennis scholarship, where she earned a B.A. in English in 1979.

Health, personal security, food, family, and Scarpetta’s niece’s developing sexual self-awareness are other important themes in the Scarpetta books. Conflicts and covert maneuvering by Scarpetta’s staff and colleagues often enter the storyline and add complexity to the murder investigations. Despite the fact that the books’ settings are set all around the United States and (less often) abroad, Richmond, Virginia is where most of them take place.
The Scarpetta books include two striking stylistic changes. The style switches from past to present tense in The Last Precinct. Beginning with Blow Fly, the narration shifts from a first-person to an omniscient third-person narrator. Even the killers’ point of view is used to describe the events. Before Blow Fly, Scarpetta is the only one who sees the events; the other points of view are only revealed in letters that Scarpetta reads.
In 1984, Cornwell started writing her first book, which featured a male investigator called Joe Constable. While researching this book, she met Dr. Marcella Farinelli Fierro, a medical examiner in Richmond, who served as the basis for Dr. Kay Scarpetta. She started working at the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in 1985. She spent six years there, beginning as a technical writer and ending as a computer analyst. She also offered her services as a volunteer for the Richmond Police Department.
Before Postmortem, the first book in Cornwell’s Scarpetta series was published in 1990, she claims to have written three books that were rejected. Postmortem is based on actual strangulations that occurred in Richmond during the summer of 1987. She received several honors for the book, including the American Edgar Award, the French Prix du Roman adventure, and the British John Creasey Award.
