Neil Gaiman Bio and Career:

Neil Richard MacKinnon Gaiman, also known as Neil Richard Gaiman, is a writer.  is an English writer of novels, graphic novels, comic books, nonfiction, radio drama, and films. His writings include the novels Stardust, American Gods, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book as well as the comic book series The Sandman. Hugo, Nebula, Bram Stoker, Newbery, and Carnegie medals are just a few of the honors he has received. For the same book, The Graveyard Book, he is the first author to receive both the Newbery and the Carnegie awards. In 2013, The Ocean at the End of the Lane won the British National Book Award for Book of the Year.

The Royal National Theatre in London, England later converted it into a critically lauded stage production that they dubbed “theatre at its best” by The Independent. The Polish and other Eastern European Jewish ancestors of Gaiman’s family. Before 1914, his great-grandfather moved from Antwerp, Belgium, to the UK. Later, he settled in Portsmouth and started a chain of food businesses. Grandfather Gaiman changed the family name from Chairman to Gaiman. His mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist, and his father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked for the same chain of stores. His sisters, Claire and Lizzy, are also younger.

Neil Gaiman was born in Portchester, Hampshire, a short distance away, before his family relocated to East Grinstead, West Sussex, in 1965. There, his parents studied Dianetics at the town’s Scientology center; one of Gaiman’s sisters works for the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles. According to Lizzy Calcioli, his other sister, “The majority of our social interactions included Scientology or our Jewish heritage. When people questioned my beliefs as a child, it would get really perplexing. I’d introduce myself as a Jewish Scientologist.” Gaiman claims that, unlike Judaism, he is not a Scientologist and that Scientology is the religion of his family.

In terms of his personal beliefs, Gaiman has said, “I believe we can affirm the existence of God in the DC Universe. I wouldn’t shout from the rooftops that God exists and that we should worship him. I’m not sure, but I would say there is a 50/50 possibility. I don’t really care about it.” He discovered R. A. Lafferty as his favorite science fiction author when he was nine years old. When he was 19 or 20 years old, he wrote to Lafferty to beg for advice on how to become a writer and sent him a Lafferty parody he had written. The author replied to Gaiman’s message with encouragement, information, and writing guidance.

According to Gaiman, Roger Zelazny was the author who had the biggest impact on him. This effect is especially evident in Gaiman’s writing style and the subjects he chooses to write about. Samuel R. Delany and Angela Carter are among the other writers, in Gaiman’s words, who “supplied the inside of my mind and set me to writing.” Gaiman draws influence from the folklore tradition for The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains, citing Otta F Swire’s book on Isle of Skye traditions as his source of inspiration.

After that, he began writing the introduction of the comic book Good Omens about the approaching end of the world, which he later co-wrote with fellow English author Terry Pratchett. Gaiman learned to read when he was four years old. He stated: “I read a lot. I adored books. Reading was enjoyable for me. I was quite well in most of my classes in school, not because I was particularly talented in them but rather because I read my schoolbooks on the first day of class, so I was aware of what was going to be covered.” Around the age of ten, he read all of Dennis Wheatley’s books. The Ka of Gifford Hillary and The Haunting of Toby Jugg particularly had an impression on him.

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, which he read at the school library, was one book that had a particularly strong impact on him. Gaiman frequently checked out and read the first two of the novel’s three volumes, despite the library only having the first two volumes available. Later, he was awarded the school’s English prize and reading award, which allowed him to finally purchase the third volume.

Gaiman received C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy for his seventh birthday. Later, he remembered that “I was impressed by his use of parenthetical comments to address the reader rather than just talking directly to them. Oh, my god, that is so cool, I would think. That is something I want to do! I want to be able to put things in parenthesis when I’m an author.

I enjoyed the impact of using brackets.”  He was also introduced to literary honors through Narnia, notably the 1956 Carnegie Medal that the final volume was awarded. The press quoted Gaiman as saying, “it had to be the most important literary honor there ever was,” after he received the 2010 Medal. and commenting that “making oneself happy at age seven is like sending a letter to yourself at age seven, so you’re really doing well if you can accomplish that.” Gaiman went to school in Ardingly, West Sussex, at Ardingly College.

Another one of my all-time favorite books as a child was Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and “forever a Favor. I became so accustomed to reading Alice that I could recite it verbatim.” As a kid, he also loved reading Batman comics. Gaiman attended a number of churches of England schools, such as Whitgift School in Croydon, Ardingly College, and Fonthill School in East Grinstead.  The seven-year-old Gaiman was compelled to leave Fonthill School and go back to the school he had previously attended due to his father’s job as a public relations representative for the Church of Scientology.

He spent a significant amount of time in East Grinstead from 1965 to 1980 and again from 1984 to 1987. He met Mary McGrath, his first wife, while she was a Scientology student and residing in his father’s East Grinstead home. In 1985, after welcoming Michael as their first child, the pair got married.

Neil Gaiman Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

Gaiman pursued journalism in the early 1980s, doing interviews and reviewing books as a way to learn about the world and forge contacts that he believed would ultimately help him become published.

He contributed a lot of writing and reviews to the British Fantasy Society. “Featherquest,” a fantasy novella, was his first professionally published short story, and it appeared in Imagine Magazine in May 1984.

Gaiman carefully read a copy of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing while he was in line for a train in 1984 at London’s Victoria Station. Gaiman was so influenced by Moore’s energetic and innovative approach to comics that he later stated “That was the last straw, and what little resistance I had vanished. I continued to make frequent trips to London’s Forbidden Planet store to purchase comic books “.

In 1984, he collaborated with Kim Newman to write his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran, as well as a collection of quotes called Ghastly Beyond Belief. Even though Gaiman felt he did a bad job, the first printing of the book immediately sold out. He learned the publisher had filed for bankruptcy when he went to give up his rights to the book. He then received a job offer from Penthouse. He turned down the offer.

He also contributed interviews and articles to numerous British publications, such as Knave. He occasionally used pseudonyms at this time, such as Richard Grey, Gerry Musgrave, and “a few of house names.”  According to Gaiman, he gave up journalism in 1987 because British publications frequently reported lies as fact.  He published Don’t Panic: The Official Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion in the late 1980s using what he refers to as “traditional English comedy.”
