About (Mick Foley– Biography)

Foley was also a big fan of pro wrestling, to the point where he used to fake matches with his pals. He decided to pursue a career as a pro wrestler after hitchhiking to Madison Square Garden as a freshman at Cortland State University to witness Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka wrestle Magnificent Muraco. Foley was able to train under veteran wrestler Dominic DeNucci after landing a job with a promoter’s ring crew.

Throughout college, he spent his weekends participating in independent fights and got a taste of the big time with an early appearance for World Wrestling Entertainment, where he was matched against top tag-team tandem the British Bulldogs and suffered a dislocated jaw. Foley ultimately got his stride as Cactus Jack, a volatile outlaw from New Mexico, and began attracting attention away from the sport’s biggest promotions for his willingness to take punishment.

Foley first wrestled for the Continental Wrestling Association, where he had a successful tag-team relationship with Gary Young, and then for World Class Championship Wrestling, when he briefly assumed the moniker of Cactus Jack Manson, a Charles Manson-like character. Foley/Cactus had already made a name for himself in World Championship Wrestling by the time he arrived in 1989. Jack had earned a reputation as a wrestler who was all too willing to be pounded to the concrete floor or struck with a metal chair.

He also focused on character development, crafting a gimmick as an uncooperative tag-team member who read books before pummeling his partner during matches. Foley rose to become one of WCW’s top stars, despite clashing with his superiors over his increasingly aggressive and dangerous ring antics. During about against Big Van Vader in Munich, Germany, in March 1994, Foley tried a “hangman” manoeuvre and got his neck wrapped in the ropes, only to pull his right ear off while attempting to release himself.

Foley began to spend more time in Japan, where he rose to prominence after surviving explosive detonations and barbed-wire impalement to win the “King of the Death Match” event in August 1995. When he returned to the United States, he found a warm welcome in Extreme Championship Wrestling, where he demonstrated his unique storytelling ability through clever promotional interviews mocking his “hardcore” reputation.

Mankind, a deranged figure who wore a leather mask, resided in a boiler room, and finished off opponents by putting his fingers down their throats, was introduced to WWE in 1996. Foley’s adaptability combined with his terrifying attitude made him an ideal foil for both popular heartthrobs like Shawn Michaels and more ominous figures like the Undertaker. Foley, as Dude Love, a fun-loving hippie in tie-dyed t-shirts, was presenting another part of his personality to admirers by summer 1997.

Later that year, he resurrected Cactus Jack, and he frequently took turns playing two or three identities at a single tournament. Foley/Mankind was tossed from the top of the 16-foot-high cage onto a table, choke-slammed through the cage top, and flung to a thumbtack-covered mat in a notoriously vicious “Hell in a Cell” battle vs. the Undertaker in June 1998. A dislocated jaw and shoulder, a mouth cut that required 14 stitches, and a dislodged tooth projecting from his nostril were among the injuries sustained during the performance.

Following the Hell in a Cell beating, Foley transformed Mankind into a humorous persona who held a Mr. Socko sock puppet. The change helped to make the veteran wrestler a mainstream appeal, and he won the WWE championship for the first time in late 1998, defeating Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Foley eventually formed the Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection with his former opponent, and the unusual combo went on to win many tag-team titles.

After losing to Triple H in February 2000, Foley ostensibly resigned, but he continued to work for WWE as its interim commissioner. After a few years off, he returned to wrestling and had high-profile feuds with stars like Randy Orton, Edge, and Ric Flair. Foley returned to the WWE fold in late 2011 after a three-year stay with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, however his bruised physique hampered his ring abilities.

On April 6, 2013, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and he continued to work for the company as the RAW division’s general manager. Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks, Foley’s first book, debuted at the top of The New York Times best-seller list in late 1999. Foley took on a new challenge in 2009 with the introduction of a stand-up comedy routine, gradually moulding his act into more of a storytelling section that riffed on his crazy history in pro wrestling, as he was no longer able to completely commit to his full-throttle exploits.
