Josef von Sternberg directed the film and later claimed to have “discovered” Dietrich. Dietrich’s signature song “Falling in Love Again,” which she recorded for Electrola, was featured in the film. In the 1930s, she recorded for Polydor and Decca Records. On the strength of The Blue Angel’s international success, and with encouragement and promotion from Josef von Sternberg, who was well-established in Hollywood, Dietrich relocated to the United States in 1930, under contract to Paramount Pictures, The Blue Angel’s U.S. film distributor. Dietrich was marketed as a German answer to Greta Garbo, the Swedish-born star of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Sternberg lavished her with gifts, among them a green Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
The car later appeared in their first film in the United States, Morocco. Between 1930 and 1935, Dietrich appeared in six films directed by von Sternberg for Paramount. Von Sternberg and Dietrich collaborated effectively to create the image of a glamorous and mysterious femme fatale. He encouraged her to lose weight and intensively coached her as an actress. She willingly followed his sometimes imperious direction in a way that several other performers did not.
Dietrich was cast as a cabaret singer again in Morocco (1930) with Gary Cooper. The film is best remembered for a scene in which she performs a song while dressed in a man’s white tie and kisses another woman, both of which were considered provocative at the time. Dietrich received her only Academy Award nomination for the film. Morocco was followed by Dishonored (1931), a major success starring Dietrich as a Mata Hari-like spy. Shanghai Express (1932), starring Anna May Wong and dubbed “Grand Hotel on Wheels” by critics, was von Sternberg and Dietrich’s biggest box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1932.
Dietrich and von Sternberg worked together again on the romance Blonde Venus (1932), this time with Cary Grant. For the first time in three years, Dietrich worked without von Sternberg in the romantic drama Song of Songs (1933), playing a naive German peasant under the direction of Rouben Mamoulian. Dietrich and Sternberg’s most stylized collaborations, The Scarlet Empress (1934) with John Davis Lodge and The Devil Is a Woman (1935), were their lowest-grossing films.
