Durk Derrick Banks born October 19, 1992 better known as Lil Durk, is a Chicago, Illinois-based rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is the collegian’s leader and founder recalls that when he was younger, there were times when he did not have enough food at home. He made his first breakthrough on social media platforms such as Myspace and YouTube, and as his online fan base grew, he became more interested in the idea of becoming a rapper.

Durk took his career more seriously after becoming a father at the age of 17 and dropping out of Paul Robeson High School to join the Black Disciples, a Chicago street gang.  He got into trouble with the law soon after joining and served time in October 2011 for gun charges, including possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.  According to court records, he later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon.

After plans to sign with Chief Keef’s and French Montana’s labels fell through,[he considered rapping as a “full-time career” following the release of his two singles, “Sneak Dissin'” and “I’ma Hitta,” which received generally positive feedback. Durk’s third mixtape, Life Ain’t No Joke, was released on October 19, 2012. The mixtape had over 216,000 downloads on DatPiff as of September 22, 2015. Durk re-released the track “L’s Anthem” in December 2012, which was remixed and featured French Montana.  2013–2015: Signed to OTF and Def Jam Recordings, as well as the Streets.

Durk’s fourth mixtape, Signed to the Streets, was released on October 14, 2013, exclusively on DatPiff after a few minor delays. It features two guest appearances by former Glo Gang member Lil Reese, as well as production credits from Paris Bueller and Young Chop, among others.

To promote the mixtape, eight music videos were released: “Bars Pt. 2,” “Oh My God,” “100 Rounds,” “Dis Ain’t What U Want,” “Bang Bros,” “Traumatized,” “Hittaz,” and “Times.” Signed to the Streets was later named Rolling Stone’s eighth-best mixtape of 2013 In an interview with XXL on October 22, 2013, Lil Durk revealed that he was working on his debut album for Def Jam. Durk was also named to the 2014 XXL Freshmen Class.

Durk’s fifth mixtape, Signed to the Streets, was released on July 7, 2014 Remember My Name and Lil Durk 2X, 2015–2016 Remember My Name (album) and Lil Durk 2X are the main articles. Durk announced the title and original release date of his debut studio album, Remember My Name, on March 25, 2015.

The album’s first single, “Like Me,” featuring Jeremih, was released on the same day.  Following his initial success, he began to consider music as a full-time career option in early 2010. He later signed with the recording label Def Jam Recordings and is now regarded as the best rapper to have ever been associated with the prestigious label.

The violent neighbourhood in which he was born and raised had a negative impact on his family. His father was imprisoned for life on drug-related charges in 1994, and his family faced financial difficulties during his childhood. Many of his early releases were influenced by Chicago’s street violence.  Lil Durk debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2020 with the single Viral Moment from his fifth studio album, Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 (2020).


Lil Durk’s commercial resurgence continued with singles such as 3 Headed Goat (featuring Lil Baby and Polo G), Backdoor, and The Voice, as well as appearances on Drake’s Laugh Now Cry Later and Pooh Shiesty’s Back In Blood, as well as his LPs The Voice (2020) and The Voice Of The Heroes (2021), which became his first release to debut at the top of the Billboard 200. Lil Durk and Lil Baby were also nominated for BET HipHop Awards for Best Duo in 2021.
