Kathi Kamen Goldmark was an American novelist, columnist, publishing consultant, radio and music producer, songwriter, and musician who lived from August 18, 1948, through May 24, 2012. While Kamen was a drama instructor at Modern Playschool/Play Mountain Place, a private school in Culver City, California, Hodder quickly gained recognition as Steely Dan’s initial drummer. She was chosen in 1974 to lead The Rock Project, a non-profit organization’s media education campaign about alternatives to unintended pregnancy targeted toward teenagers. She worked with the Population Institute, later the Center for Population Options, until 1980, when the project’s headquarters were relocated to San Francisco.
Her first marriage to Joe Goldmark ended in divorce two years later, and they had a son named Tony Goldmark. In 2002, Kathi and Joe Goldmark were divorced. She married Sam Barry in 2009. The first child of Betty and Seymour Kamen, Kathi Kamen was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was reared in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Her parents were photographers who eventually transitioned into careers as health and nutrition educators and authors. Paul, a writer and naval architect, and Michael, a college lecturer, are her two brothers. Kathi graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Yellow Springs, Ohio’s Antioch College in 1971, a Master of Arts from Plainfield, Vermont’s Goddard College in 1974, and a California teaching credential in 1974.
