Joni Mitchell Bio and Career:

Canadian-American singer-songwriter Roberta Joan “Joni” Mitchell CC; formerly Anderson. Mitchell’s compositions often focus on social and philosophical ideas as well as her thoughts about romance, femininity, disillusionment, and joy. She draws inspiration from folk, pop, rock, classical, and jazz. Numerous honors have been bestowed upon her, including eleven Grammy Awards and a 1997 admission into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When everything is said and done, Joni Mitchell could be remembered as the most significant and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century, according to AllMusic and Rolling Stone, who both referred to her as “one of the finest composers ever”.

The daughter of Myrtle Marguerite (née McKee) and William Andrew Anderson, Mitchell was born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.  Her father came from a Norwegian family that may have had some Sámi heritage; her mother’s grandparents were Scottish and Irish. Her father was a flight lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force who trained aspiring pilots at RCAF Station Fort Macleod, and her mother was a teacher. She eventually relocated to many locations in western Canada with her parents. Her father worked as a grocery store owner after World War II, and the family relocated to Saskatchewan, settling in Maidstone and North Battleford.

Later, she wrote other songs, including “Song for Sharon,” about her childhood in a tiny village. On the weekends, she continued to perform as a folk musician at her college and a nearby hotel. She started working at The Depression Coffee House in Calgary at this time, “performing lengthy sorrowful ballads in a low key,” for $15 per week. She performed in Calgary’s hootenannies and on a few regional radio and TV programs.  She informed her mother that she wanted to become a folk singer in Toronto when she was 20 years old in 1964.

For the first time in her life, she left western Canada and moved toward Ontario in the east. During the three-day train trip, Mitchell composed her first song, “Day After Day.” She made a pit stop at the Mariposa Folk Festival to visit the Cree folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie, who had influenced her. Mitchell sang at Mariposa the next year, her first performance in front of a large crowd, and Sainte-Marie subsequently recorded Mitchell’s music.

Mitchell played a few concerts at the Half Beat and the Village Corner in Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood but largely non-union engagements “in church basements and YMCA meeting rooms” since she didn’t have the $200 required for musicians’ union payments. She turned to busk after being turned down by prestigious folk clubs while she “worked in the women’s apparel area of a downtown department shop to pay the rent.”  Duke Redbird, a poet, shared a hallway with her when she resided in a shared residence.

Mitchell also saw that the folk scene in each place tended to give seasoned artists the sole right to sing their hallmark songs, even when they had not composed them. Mitchell believed this to be exclusive and inimical to the egalitarian ideal of folk music. She discovered that her greatest traditional music was already owned by other vocalists. She reported hearing it “That cannot be sung. That music is mine. I also gave another name. That cannot be sung. That music is mine. This is how I first learned about territorial music. It resurfaced for me in Toronto.” She made the decision to create her own tunes.

In the latter half of 1964, Mitchell learned she was expecting a child with her Calgary ex-boyfriend Brad MacMath. Later, she noted, “In an upstairs room with little money, winter approaching, and just a fireplace for heat,  abandoned me when I was three months pregnant. Gap-toothed banister spindles served as fuel for the inhabitants of the previous winter.”  In February 1965, she gave birth to a baby girl. She gave up her daughter Kelly Dale Anderson for adoption because she was unable to care for the newborn.

Despite making references to it in various songs, including “Little Green,” which Mitchell performed in the 1960s and finally recorded for the 1971 album Blue, the incident remained secret for most of Mitchell’s career. Mitchell crooned, “Your kids are coming up straight / My child’s a stranger / I bore her / But I could not nurture her,” in the song “Chinese Cafe” off of the 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast.

At the time, not many people paid any attention to these lyrics. The adoption tale was sold to a tabloid magazine in 1993, which is when Mitchell’s former roommate from their 1960s art school days first made the world aware of the existence of Mitchell’s daughter.

In the northwest of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, near Waskesiu Lake, Mitchell began singing with her pals around bonfires. At the age of 18, she expanded her repertoire to include songs by her favorite musicians, including Miles Davis and Édith Piaf. On October 31, 1962, she had her first paid performance at a Saskatoon club that also included jazz and folk musicians. Mitchell and her friends looked for jazz artists to play at events back then, despite the fact that she never played jazz herself.

My jazz background started with one of the early Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross records, according to Mitchell. She claims that The Hottest New Group in Jazz was difficult to locate in Canada “I thus saved up and paid a bootleg price for it. That record served as my personal Beatles for me. I memorized every song from it, and I don’t believe there is any CD anywhere where I can say the same for every note and word.”

After completing his high school education at Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon, Mitchell studied painting under abstract expressionist painter Henry Bonli at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate before departing for the 1963–1964 academic year to enroll at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. She was disappointed by the place’s emphasis on technical ability over free-form creativity, and she felt out of sync with the movement toward pure abstraction and commercial art. Her parents, who could recall the Great Depression and highly valued education, were quite upset by her choice to leave school after a year when she was 20 years old.

Before going on to the nightclubs of Toronto, Ontario, Mitchell started singing in local nightclubs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and other parts of western Canada. In 1965, she relocated to the US, where she started performing. Other folk singers had recorded a few of her own songs, including “Urge for Going,” “Chelsea Morning,” “Both Sides, Now,” and “The Circle Game,” enabling her to contract with Reprise Records and released her first album, Song to a Seagull, in 1968. With songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” Mitchell helped define an era and a generation after relocating to Southern California.

It was ranked as the 30th greatest album ever created in Rolling Stone’s 2003 list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” climbing to number 3 in the 2020 edition. Her 1971 album Blue is often recognized as one of the finest albums of all time.  The New York Times selected Blue as one of the 25 albums in 2000 that it felt best exemplified the “turning points and apex of 20th-century popular music.” On a list of the Best Albums Made By Women in 2017, NPR rated Blue at the top.

On 1974’s Court and Spark, which included the radio songs “Help Me” and “Free Man in Paris” and became her best-selling album, Mitchell moved labels and started experimenting with more jazz-influenced melodic concepts via luscious pop textures. Around 1975, Mitchell’s vocal range started to transition from mezzo-soprano to a more versatile contralto.  As she combined jazz with rock and roll, R&B, classical music, and non-Western rhythms, her unique piano, and open-tuned guitar compositions also became more harmonically and rhythmically complex.

She started collaborating with well-known jazz artists in the late 1970s, including Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Charles Mingus, who invited her to be a part of his last recordings. Later, she started listening to pop and techno music and started protesting politics. At the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in 2002, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2021, she was named a Kennedy Center Honoree.

Most of her albums were produced by Mitchell or with her. She stopped touring and published her 17th and last album of original songs in 2007. She was an outspoken critic of the music business. Mitchell describes herself as a “painting sidetracked by circumstance” and has created the majority of her own record covers.

By then, Mitchell’s daughter, now known as Kilauren Gibb, had already started looking for her real parents. Mitchell’s daughter and her first met in 1997.  Mitchell said that she stopped composing songs after the reunion and that her incapacity to care for her newborn kid was the true catalyst for her urge to start again.

She grew sensitized to the whole universe and started writing individually when she was unable to convey herself to the person she wanted to speak to. At the age of nine, Mitchell had polio, which required weeks in the hospital. She began smoking that year as well, although she disputes that smoking has harmed her voice. At age 11, she and her family relocated to Saskatoon, which they now call home.

Mitchell had academic difficulties; her primary hobby was painting. She took a short course on the classical piano around this period. She concentrated on her artistic ability and for the first time thought about a singing or dance career.

She was inspired to compose poetry by one eccentric instructor, Arthur Kratzmann, and her first CD included a tribute to him. When she was in grade 12, she quit school and partied downtown with a raucous crowd until she realized she was becoming too close to the criminal underworld.

Around this period, country music started to outperform rock. Mitchell wanted to play the guitar, but she first chose the ukulele since her mother objected to country music’s connotations with hillbillies. She eventually learned how to play the guitar by using a Pete Seeger songbook.  She created alternate tunings to make up for the polio-related weakness in her left hand; she then utilized these tunings to develop unconventional methods of harmony and song structure.
