John Rich Bio and Career:
John Rich has had a prosperous solo career in addition to his role as one half of the country-rock duet Big & Rich, which has achieved unprecedented levels of popularity. Emerging in the early 1990s, Rich served as the lead singer of the country band Lonestar for a number of years before to releasing his first solo album, Rescue Me, in 2001. Two years later, he joined forces with Big Kenny to create the duet Big & Rich. Together, they were responsible for the release of four studio albums and 15 songs that charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list before going on indefinite hiatus in 2007.
Rich revived his solo career with the release of Son of a Preacher Man in 2009. This was followed by the release of two extended plays in 2011 (Rich Rocks and For the Kids), as well as occasional one-off singles, such as “Shut Up About Politics” in 2019 and “Earth to God” in 2020. John Rich, a singer and composer who was born in Amarillo, Texas, got his first taste of fame in Nashville, where he was the lead vocalist for the band Lonestar. After the band’s second album was released, he parted ways with the group in the midst of some conflict and went into the recording studio to work on a record of his own.
Underneath the Same Moon, the album that resulted from these efforts and which featured collaborations with Sara Evans, the Fairfield Four, and Delbert McClinton, as well as his future songwriting partner from Big & Rich, Kenny Alphin (aka Big Kenny), was finished in 1998 but was subsequently shelved for unknown reasons. During this time, Big Kenny was working on his own solo album, which he titled Live a Little. Unfortunately, the album met the same untimely demise as Underneath the Same Moon. Since none of the songwriters had a solo record to promote, they decided to put all of their efforts into Big & Rich, who went on to become a successful country duet in the 2000s.
Years later, Rich’s success with Alphin reignited interest in his solo album, and as a result, BNA Records decided to release Underneath the Same Moon officially in March of 2006. The year that followed, Rich occupied his time with presenting his own reality television programme called Gone Country and travelling in support of Big & Rich’s third studio album. At the meanwhile, he managed to find time to further his solo career with the subdued album Son of a Preacher Man, which was his second solo record and was released in the beginning of 2009. After he had finished listening to the record, he continued.
Rich released the track “Country Done Come to Town” as a forerunner to the harder-edged, party-down sound of his 2011 EPs Rich Rocks and For the Kids, which more thoroughly reflect the early days of Big & Rich. Rich Rocks and For the Kids were both published by Big Machine Records. During the production of 2012’s Hillbilly Jedi, Rich and Big Kenny worked together again. Following the completion of their contract with Warner Bros. Nashville and the release of their fifth studio album, Gravity, the duo established their own record label, Big & Rich Records, in 2014.
Following the release of Did It for the Party in 2017, Rich released “Shut Up About Politics,” which served as his first solo song in over a decade. Greg Gutfeld, a right-wing commentator, collaborated in the writing of the book “Shut Up About Politics,” which also featured vocal contributions from members of “The Five,” a group of conservative talking heads who are featured on the Fox television programme of the same name. In the year 2020, the band released two further singles: “Rebel Wings (Song for Nick),” and “Earth to God.”
John Rich is the son of Jim Rich, a Baptist pastor, and Judy Overton Rich, his mother. John Rich was born in Amarillo, Texas. After completing his high school education at Dickson County Senior High in Dickson, Tennessee, John headed to Nashville to pursue a career as a vocalist at Opryland USA after moving there after graduation. He had aspirations of competing at the highest level in team roping. Not too much longer after that, he got together with the band Texas, which would later become known as Lonestar. During his time with Lonestar, Rich served as both the bass guitarist and, on occasion, the lead vocalist. His lead vocals were included on one of the band’s songs, “Heartbroke Every Day,” and the song was named after him. Rich was also a co-writer for two of the band’s hits, which were as follows:
Both “Come Cryin’ to Me” and “Say When” were hits for the band, with the former reaching number one on the singles chart. Rich resigned from his position at Lonestar in January of 1998. [1] After that, Rich embarked on a solo career under the auspices of BNA Records, the record company that also represented Lonestar. He also recorded an album for the label, although it was not released until the year 2006. He had two songs that charted for the company. After getting to know cancer sufferer Katie Darnell in 2001, he was motivated to create the album Rescue Me, which he then independently published the following year.
Big & Rich was formed in 2002 when Big Rich joined forces with Big Kenny. Horse of a Different Color, Comin’ to Your City, and Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace are the three studio albums that the duo has released under the Warner Bros. Records label. These albums were released in 2004, 2005, and 2007 consecutively. These albums were responsible for 10 songs that charted on the country charts, including “Lost in This Moment,”

which peaked at number one. Additionally, Rich contributed to the writing of all of the duo’s tracks, mostly in collaboration with Big Kenny. Following the success of Big & Rich, in 1999, his solo album, titled Underneath the Same Moon, was published by BNA. This release was timed to coincide with the release of Big Kenny’s solo album, titled Live a Little, which had been unreleased up until that point.
A fourth studio album by Big & Rich was published in the summer of 2012, and the uplifting song “That’s Why I Pray” reached #15 on the country charts after being included on the album. Dr. Rich headed the city of Boston’s efforts on Men’s Health, Cancer, Cardiovascular Health, and Health Disparities before coming to work at Drexel University. Before that, he was the Medical Director of the Boston Public Health Commission.
In his role as a general care physician at Boston Medical Center, he was responsible for establishing the Young Men’s Health Clinic and launching the Boston Health CREW, a programme that educates and mentors young men from inner city neighborhoods in the role of peer health educators. His book “Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Trauma and Violence in the Lives of Young Black Men” (published by The Johns Hopkins University Press in 2009) is about the violence that occurs in urban areas and includes accounts of both trauma and recovery.
Dr. Rich received his Bachelor of Arts in English degree from Dartmouth College, his Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University School of Medicine, and his Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University School of Public Health. He did his internship, residency, and fellowship in primary care internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. After that, he attended the Harvard Medical School to finish his fellowship in general internal medicine.
Dr. Rich was chosen for membership in the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in the year 2009. At the moment, he is active on a number of boards, one of which being the Philadelphia Board of Health, in addition to the Trust for America’s Health. Between the years 2008 and 2016, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College.
