John Irving Bio and Career:
John Winslow Irving is an American-Canadian novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter who was born John Wallace Blunt Jr. on March 2, 1942. Following the worldwide success of The World According to Garp in 1978, Irving received praise from both critics and the general public. At the 72nd Academy Awards, he received the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for his screenplay for The Cider House Rules. The son of Helen Frances and John Wallace Blunt, Sr., a writer and executive recruiter, Irving was born John Wallace Blunt, Jr. in Exeter, New Hampshire; but the couple split up while the baby was growing. Colin Franklin Newell Irving, Irving’s stepfather, was a professor at Phillips Exeter Academy where Irving was raised in Exeter.
Hammy Bissell, his uncle, was a member of the faculty as well. John Irving participated in the wrestling program at Phillips Exeter as both a student-athlete and an assistant coach, and wrestling is a recurring theme in his writings. Frederick Buechner, a writer, and Christian theologian who tutored Irving when he was a student at Exeter is cited in an epigraph in his book A Prayer for Owen Meany. Having dyslexia, Irving At the age of 26, Setting Free the Bears, Irving’s first book, launched his career. Although the book received some favorable reviews, it did not find many readers. He took Kurt Vonnegut’s classes at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop in the late 1960s.
The Water-Method Man and The 158-Pound Marriage, his second and third books, earned favorable reviews. Irving agreed to take a job as an assistant professor of English at Mount Holyoke College in 1975. Irving soon after authored a book titled My Movie Business about his role in producing The Cider House Rules’ motion picture adaptation. Irving promoted the book on the CBC Television show Hot Type after its 1999 release. Tom Wolfe, a best-selling American novelist, was insulted by Irving during the interview, calling him a “can’t write” and claiming that Wolfe’s work made him gag. Later that year, Wolfe made an appearance on Hot Type and referred to Irving, Norman Mailer, and John Updike as his “three stooges,” who were terrified by his most recent book, A Man in Full.
The Fourth Hand, Irving’s tenth novel, also achieved bestseller status in 2001. Tatjana Hauptmann’s pictures were used in the 2004 publication of A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound, a children’s picture book that was initially released as part of A Widow for One Year. On July 12, 2005, Irving’s Until I Find You, his eleventh book, was published.
The sexual assault he suffered at age 11 at the hands of an older lady and the new entry into his life of his biological father’s family were two very private aspects of his life that he had never previously acknowledged in public, according to a June 28, 2005 piece in The New York Times.
The protagonist in Irving’s 12th book, Last Night in Twisted River, which was released in 2009, is a writer whose career, in the words of reviewer Boyd Tonkin, “teasingly mimics Irving’s own.”Four of Irving’s books have debuted at the top of The New York Times bestseller list: The Hotel New Hampshire, which held the top spot for seven weeks and spent more than 27 weeks in the top 15; The Cider House Rules; A Widow for One Year; and The Fourth Hand.
When his initial publisher, Random House, failed to promote his books, Irving gave Dutton his fourth book, The World According to Garp, in exchange for a bigger marketing commitment. The book went on to become a worldwide success and cultural phenomenon. It was a nominee for the 1979 National Book Award for Fiction, which Tim O’Brien finally won for his book Going After Cacciato, and the following year, its first paperback version took home the prize.
Glenn Close and John Lithgow both received nominated for Academy Awards for their roles in the subsequent movie adaptation of Garp, which was directed by George Roy Hill and starred Robin Williams and Glenn Close. In the movie, Irving makes a quick cameo as the official for one of Garp’s high school wrestling bouts. The Global Garp claims that The Stories of John Cheever won the 1979 Award in Fiction, despite the fact that Garp was one of three works the Pulitzer Jury Committee submitted to the Pulitzer Advisory Board for consideration.
Garp made Irving a household name from an unknown, scholarly literary author, and his following novels became big sellers. The Hotel New Hampshire, which received generally positive reviews from reviewers, came next. Like Garp, the book was swiftly adapted into a movie, with Jodie Foster, Rob Lowe, and Beau Bridges as the main cast. Tony Richardson directed the movie. The 1980 Fiction magazine short story “Interior Space” was eventually included in the 1981 O. Henry Prize Stories collection.
Irving’s biological father, who he never met, was an Army Air Forces pilot who was shot down over Burma in July 1943 but managed to survive the war. He included the event in his book The Cider House Rules. Irving was over 40 years old in 1981 when he learned about his father’s bravery. He has had five of his books made into movies. And around Phillips Exeter Academy in the town of Exeter, New Hampshire, has been the setting for many of Irving’s works and short stories.
John Irving Profile-
Awards:
The Cider House Rules were released by Irving in 1985. The epic’s main subject is abortion, and the setting is an orphanage in Maine. Many compared the book to Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. A Prayer for Owen Meany, a New England family epic about religion set at a New England boarding school in Toronto, Ontario, was Irving’s subsequent book.
The Tin Drum by Günter Grass had a major influence on the book, and the storyline also makes references to Dickens’ writings and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. For the first time, Irving looked at the effects of the Vietnam War in Owen Meany, especially the forced conscription that Irving escaped since he was a married parent when he was eligible for the draught. Since Garp, Owen Meany has been Irving’s best-selling novel.
For his subsequent novel, A Son of the Circus, Irving went back to Random House. It was rejected by critics but went on to become a national success due to Irving’s reputation for writing intelligent, captivating page-turners. It is debatably his most complex and challenging work and a departure from many of the topics and places in his prior books. A Widow for One Year, which was recognized as a New York Times Notable Book, marked Irving’s comeback in 1998.
Irving’s script for The Cider House Rules was turned into a movie in 1999, after spending over ten years in production, under the direction of Lasse Hallström and starring Michael Caine, Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, and Delroy Lindo. Irving made a brief cameo as the displeased stationmaster. Irving received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the movie, which was nominated for many Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
