John Goodman, whose full name is John Stephen Goodman, is an American actor who was arguably best known for his long-running role as Dan Conner in the television sitcom Roseanne (1988–1997; 2018). John Goodman was born on June 20, 1952, in Affton, Missouri, in the United States. Because of his towering physique, movie directors often cast him in parts in which he plays characters that are exaggerated or inflated versions of real people. Goodman received a full scholarship to play college football at Southwest Missouri State University.

However, he had an injury that prevented him from continuing his football career, and so he turned his attention to acting instead. After receiving his diploma in 1975, he relocated to New York City in order to pursue a career in acting. Before he was cast in the 1979 Broadway version of Loose Ends, he began his career by performing in small dinner theatres and appearing in television advertisements. A few years later, in 1985, he returned to Broadway to participate in the play Big River in the role of Huck Finn’s father, which was the part for which he had first garnered critical recognition.

In the early 1980s, Goodman started making frequent appearances in movies, and in 1987, he was cast as an escaped prisoner in the offbeat comedy Raising Arizona, which was directed by the Coen brothers. His big break came, however, when he was cast in the role of the all-American, blue-collar family father in the famous television comedy series Roseanne. As a result of his work in this role, he received nominations for seven Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award (1993).

Goodman’s film career started to take off during his run on the hit show Roseanne, which was also quite lucrative for him. In the film Punchline (1988), he portrayed the husband of a comedienne, and in the film Always, he co-starred with Richard Dreyfuss as a pilot who battled forest fires (1989). More than twenty of Goodman’s films were released throughout the decade of the 1990s. These films included The Babe (1992), in which he played the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, and The Flintstones (1994), a remake of the original animated film. In the films Barton Fink (1991), The Big Lebowski (1998), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2001), all of which were directed by the Coen brothers, he played a Vietnam War veteran who was still living in the past.

Where Art Thou? (2000), starring alongside George Clooney as a dishonest Bible salesman in 1930s Mississippi. The film was directed by Robert Altman. In the film Coyote Ugly (2000), he portrayed a father who is concerned about his daughter’s impending relocation to New York City. In the film One Night at McCool’s, he portrayed a detective (2001). Following that, he had minor parts in movies such as the manager of singer Bobby Darin in the documentary Beyond the Sea (2004), a corrupt congressman in the comedy Evan Almighty (2007), and a baseball executive in the drama Trouble with the Curve (2008). (2012).

Goodman also had roles in two films that won the Oscar for best picture in a row, both of which were about Hollywood industry figures. He played a studio mogul in The Artist (2011) and a real-life makeup artist enlisted in a CIA operation in Argo. Both of these films won the Oscar for best picture in a given year (2012). In 2013, Goodman appeared in the role of a nefarious gangster in the carefree comedy The Hangover Part III, as well as the role of a bitter heroin-addicted jazz pianist in the drama Inside Llewyn Davis, which was directed by the Coen brothers.
