Jason Mraz Bio and Career:

American singer-songwriter Jason Thomas Mraz (born June 23, 1977) originally gained notoriety in the San Diego coffee shop scene in 2000. Waiting for My Rocket to Come, his first studio album was released in 2002 and included the famous song “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry).” Mr. A-Z, Mraz’s second album, was released in 2005 and was a huge financial success.

Over 100,000 copies of the album were sold in the US, and it peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200. We Sing, Mraz’s third studio album, was released in 2008. We Move. We commit theft. It had a strong worldwide commercial start at number three on the Billboard 200, mostly because of the smash song “I’m Yours.” The song stayed a then-record 76 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching its peak at number 6 and earning him his first top ten hits.

His highest-charting album, Love Is a Four-Letter Word, landed at number two on the Billboard 200. Mraz has won two Grammy Awards, been nominated for two more, won two Teen Choice Awards and one People’s Choice Award, and was inducted into the Hal David Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has performed on stages across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and portions of Africa, earning Platinum and multi-Platinum certifications in more than 20 nations.

Mraz has made over seven million albums and over 11.5 million single downloads since July 2014. Brazilian music has significantly affected his musical approach, from the rhythmic feeling to the usage of nylon string guitars. Mraz was reared in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where he was born. Through his grandpa, who immigrated to the US from Austria-Hungary in 1915, he is of Czech and Slovak ancestry.

His last name, frost, is a Czech word. Czech for “mráz” When he was five years old, his parents, Tom (Tomá) Mraz and June Tomes, were divorced. His mother works as a vice president at a Bank of America office, while his father is a postal worker. Mraz claims to have had a perfect upbringing, saying, “It was highly American in Mechanicsville, where I grew up. White picket fences, churches at every intersection, little crime, and almost no drug usage were all present.

It was a nice area to raise a family.” Mraz participated in the school choir, theatre club, and cheering team when she was a student at Lee-Davis High School. In Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, he played Joseph, and in a production about the Peanuts characters, he played Snoopy. Mraz earned his degree in 1995. After graduating from high school, Mraz spent roughly a year and a half studying at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. His initial goal was to work in musical theatre.

Mraz learned to play the guitar while living in New York thanks to a friend who gave him a ready guitar to be trashed. Mraz’s guitar allowed him to perform music alone and compose his songs. Before joining the Ashland Stage Company, Mraz relocated to Richmond, Virginia’s Shockoe Bottom district, where he worked various odd jobs, such as janitor at an elementary school.

Mraz then received a scholarship and enrolled at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. Mraz chose to go west instead of attending lessons, and after arriving in San Diego, he decided to remain. Mraz started working as a roadie with the band Elgin Park not long after relocating to San Diego in 1999. At the Ocean Beach neighborhood coffee shop Java Joe’s, where he played once every week for over three years, he met future band member Toca Rivera and gained a following locally and online.

Live at Java Joe’s, an acoustic live album by Mraz featuring percussionist Rivera and bassist Ian Sheridan was released in 2001. The tracks on the album included “1000 Things,” “You and I Both,” and “Halfway Home,” which Mraz would later re-release. The CD also included Mraz’s free-form singing approach. The CD Jason Mraz: Live & Acoustic 2001 became available for download on iTunes on March 11, 2008.

Mraz relocated to Los Angeles after signing a recording deal with Elektra Records in the latter part of 2001. He served as Jewel’s opening act on her 2002 tour. Waiting for My Rocket to Come, which Mraz released on October 15, 2002, was his first album on a big label and reached the top 55 on the Billboard 200. The Matrix, a music production duo, co-wrote the album’s first single, “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry),” which debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the year’s most popular singles.

A classmate from high school diagnosed with cancer served as the song’s inspiration. When the album first came out, Mraz said that he did not like “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” and did not want it on the album since the record company had “chalked up this chorus” when it was initially intended to be a unique and experimental song. Mraz performed on “The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn” the day after the album was released. Waiting for My Rocket to Come achieved Platinum certification on May 19, 2005, after selling 1 million copies.

At the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2003, Mraz served as Tracy Chapman’s opening act. Tonight, Not Again: Jason Mraz Live at the Eagles Ballroom was a live CD and DVD Mraz published in 2004 when he was on tour. He played with his touring band, including Blues Traveler vocalist John Popper, guitarists Rivera, Sheridan, and keyboardist Eric Hinojosa.

Mr. A-Z, Mraz’s second album for a big label and one produced by Steve Lillywhite for Atlantic Records, was made available on July 26, 2005. Kevin Kadish produced the album’s first song, “Wordplay,” which peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Both the record and Lillywhite were nominated for Grammy Awards in the category of Producer of the Year and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

On September 12, 2005, Mraz kicked off a protracted tour in favor of Mr. A-Z at the San Diego Music Awards. Bushwalla and Tristan Prettyman, with whom he had co-written the song “Shy That Way” in 2002, were among the opening bands for the tour. Mraz served as the opening act for the Rolling Stones on five of their globe tour dates from 2005 to 2006, and Alanis Morissette on her 2005 Jagged Little Pill Acoustic tour. He performed as part of the yearly Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore in March 2006.

He performed mainly in intimate settings and at music festivals around the United States in May. He also made a few appearances in the United Kingdom and Ireland to support James Blunt. A solo performance with P.O.D., Better Than Ezra, Live, and The Presidents of the United States of America was part of the tour on May 6, 2006. Mraz gave a free performance on July 1, 2006, at the foot of the Gateway Arch as the central act of St. Louis’ annual Fair St. Louis. Mraz also served as Rob Thomas’ Something to Be Tour’s opening act on several occasions during this period.

Mraz performed a song from Bob Marley’s “One Love” as one of several musicians included in The Gap’s “Favorites” autumn advertising campaign in 2005. The live, online-only album Selections for Friends, captured during the Songs for Friends Tour, was released in 2006. Mraz rewrote “Plain Jane,” a previous song he had composed, to become “The Beauty in Ugly” in 2007 for the ABC television program Ugly Betty. The song aired as part of ABC’s “Be Ugly in ’07” promotion.

Additionally same year, Chris Richardson, a competitor on American Idol, sang a rendition of Mraz’s “Geek in the Pink.” We Sing. We Dance, Mraz’s third studio album, was made available on May 13th, 2008. We commit theft. On the Billboard 200, the album debuted at position three. It peaked at number 3 in the US and Australia and entered the top 10 on numerous foreign music charts. It earned Platinum certification in March 2009 after selling 1 million copies. Mraz, the album’s name, was inspired by a painting by Scottish artist David Shrigley. Mraz released three EPs, including acoustic versions of album tracks, before the album’s release.

The first track, “I’m Yours,” was created in August 2004 and made available as a free acoustic B-side with the release of Mr. A-Z. Fans grew to love the song because of Mraz’s live performances. The song’s success became clear to Mraz when he performed it at a festival in Sweden in 2007. The enthusiastic and singing audience made him understand how famous the song was, and he decided to make it the focus of his next album. On the Billboard Hot 100, “I’m Yours” became Mraz’s first Top 10 success, reaching its highest position of #6 on September 20, 2008.

In the end, it stayed on the Hot 100 for 76 weeks, more than any other song in the magazine’s 51-year history (a record since broken by Imagine Dragons with “Radioactive” in 2014). With over seven million digital sales, it was a huge financial success in the US, earning a 7x multi-Platinum certification from the RIAA. The song was also popular abroad, reaching the top of the charts in 11 additional nations in New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, and Sweden.

It received more than 125,000,000 views on YouTube by May 2012. It was the first song to reach the top of the charts in all four radio formats: Adult Contemporary, Mainstream Top 40, Adult Top 40, and Triple-A. Additionally, it was on the Smooth Jazz and Latin Pop charts. Mraz won his first two Grammy Awards in 2010 for Best Pop Collaboration and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Make It Mine.”
