Jarvis Cocker Bio and Career:
Jarvis Cocker is a well-known English composer, singer, and musician. He was born on September 19, 1963 in England. In the 1990s, when his band Pulp was an integral element of the successful Britpop movement, he initially gained widespread recognition.
Jarvis Cocker spent his formative years in Sheffield, which is located in Northern England. His father, Mac, uprooted the family and relocated to Sydney in Australia, leaving behind his wife and children. Mac was not just a musician but also a DJ. Their mother, who is now a member of the Conservative council, took care of Jarvis and his sister when they were growing up. The first time that Cocker and his sister were able to see their father was when they took a trip to Australia in the year 1998.
Mac Cocker was able to maintain a successful career as a radio DJ (perhaps helped by the fact that he promoted rumours that he was Joe Cocker’s brother), and he had gone to a hippy commune in Darwin after retiring from the industry. At the age of 25, Jarvis Cocker uprooted his life and travelled to London to attend the Central St. Martins school of Fine Art and Film. In 1991, he received his diploma.
In the world of music, Pulp was first organised under the name Arabacus Pulp (a term picked up by Cocker in an Economics lesson). At the time, Cocker was 15 years old. Later, the band changed their name to Pulp, and between 1983 and 1992, they recorded a total of three albums (If, Freaks and Separations). The band was eventually successful in the music industry in the 1990s when Jarvis Cocker took a break from the band to pursue his education in London.
His ‘n’ Hers, the band’s breakthrough album, was released in 1994 on Island Records. The album included the songs “Babies,” “Do You Remember The First Time?,” and “Do You Remember The Last Time?
Pulp released their second studio album, titled Different Class, in 1995. This album was even more successful than its predecessor and was awarded the Mercury Music Prize for that year. The songs “Common People” and “Mis-Shaped” were released as singles in advance of the album.
The band’s most successful releases were those from the album Different Class. Both of the band’s subsequent albums, This Is Hardcore (which was released in 1998) and We Love Life (which was released in 2001), were commercially successful, but none came close to matching the popularity of Different Class. The band has been on indefinite hiatus since after the publication of a compilation CD of their best hits.
Jarvis Cocker, frontman for the band Pulp, was a frequent guest on many television shows and even hosted his own arts programme for Channel 4 called Journeys Into the Outside during the band’s most successful years as part of the Britpop scene. In 1996, Spitting Image presented a satirical rendition of the song “Common People.”
Jarvis Cocker Profile-
Awards:
Jarvis Cocker was offended by Michael Jackson’s arrogant performance of “Earth Song” at the 1996 BRIT Awards. During that performance, Jackson portrayed himself as a Christ-like figure, and he was accompanied by children and a rabbi. Jarvis Cocker took offence to this. Jarvis Cocker and his buddy Peter Mansell stormed the stage while the concert was in progress, and Jarvis Cocker flashed his bottom to the members of the crowd.
The police have arrested Jarvis Cocker on the suspicion that he was involved in an attack. He was joined by the comedian Bob Mortimer, who also happens to be a former attorney. Mortimer acted as his legal representative. Jarvis Cocker was cleared of all charges and freed. After the event, record sales for Pulp soared through the sky, and a waxwork figure of Jarvis Cocker costing £30,000 was installed at Rock Circus to commemorate the occasion.
Jarvis Cocker started performing under the stage name Darren Spooner for his band Relaxed Muscle in the year 2003. Jarvis, the artist’s self-titled first solo album, was released by Jarvis Cocker in November of 2006. The year after that, he had an appearance on the podcast Pocket Symphony, by Air.
Jarvis Cocker was in charge of programming the Meltdown Festival in 2007, which took place at the Southbank Centre in London. He invited a variety of bands, including Devo, Motorhead, and Roky Erikson, to play there. Further Complications was the album that Jarvis Cocker published in May of 2009, and it includes the singles “Angela” and “Girls Like It Too.” Steve Albini was the one responsible for recording the album.
Jarvis Cocker has participated in a variety of side projects and collaborations during the course of his career. He made an appearance on the album Lovelife that Lush released in 1996, playing a duet with the band’s vocalist Miki Berenyi. In addition, he contributed a number of tracks to the album Pickled Eggs & Sherbert that was released by The All Seeing I. Jarvis Cocker has shared the stage with both Marianne Faithfull and Nancy Sinatra.
In his personal life, Jarvis Cocker was married to Camille Bidault-Waddington and they made their home in Paris. Together, they are the parents of a child named Albert, who was born in April of 2003. In 2009, Camille and Jarvis split with mutual respect for one another.
