During the 2009 Futures circuit, Sock won his first senior tournament, which was held in November 2009. At the 2010 Miami Masters, he played in his first ATP qualifying round. Marco Chiudinelli defeated him in his debut main-draw match as a professional at the 2010 US Open. Sock placed 878th in the world at the end of the 2010 season. During the 2012 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, Sock lost to Izak van der Merwe in the second round. He competed in the 2012 BB&T Atlanta Open, his next event. Alex Bogomolov, Jr., the seventh seed, was beaten by him. John Isner defeated him in the quarterfinals.

The first-round defeat of Florian Mayer at the US Open by Sock was due to Mayer retiring. Flavio Cipolla of Italy, ranked No. 85 in the world, upset him in straight sets in his first Grand Slam third-round match, but Almagro prevailed in four sets. Sock reached his first two Challenger Tour finals in the latter two months of the 2012 season, winning at Tiburon in October and finishing second in Champaign-Urbana in November. First time in the top 150: The finals helped him achieve this milestone.

From March to June, Sock competed in challenger events, winning a doubles title at the Orlando Open with Mitchell Krueger. Sock earned his first singles trophy in over four years after defeating third seed Emilio Gómez in the final of the Little Rock Challenger. Sock made his first ATP tour quarterfinal since the 2018 Paris Masters thanks to a wildcard into the Hall of Fame Open in Newport. Before losing in three sets against Kevin Anderson, he beat Alex Bolt and third seed Yoshihito Nishioka. He teamed up with William Blumberg as a wildcard pairing at the same competition.

Third seeds John-Patrick Smith and Harri Heliövaara also advanced to the final, where they were defeated by Tennys Sandgren and Denis Kudla of the United States, as did second seeds Jonathan Erlich and Santiago González. They beat Austin Krajicek and Vasek Pospisil in the finals. Also at the Citi Open, he was given a wildcard to play Rafael Nadal in the second round after defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round of play once more. He lost in a tiebreak in the third set of the match, which lasted to three sets.

In order to play in the US Open Singles, Sock was given a wildcard. Second seed Alexander Bublik was knocked out in five sets by fourth seed Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round, his first appearance in the third round of a grand slam since the Australian Open in 2017. Despite winning the first set, he dropped the next two sets and had to retire early in the fourth set with an upper right leg injury in the third round against Alexander Zverev. Sock’s style of play is similar to Andy Roddick’s, according to the former tennis player who has since retired “[Sock] has taken up about half of the court with the serve.

Forehand and backhand, he’s got the flailing elbow.” In an interview in 2012, Sock stated that he and Rafael Nadal share a more comparable playing style “In contrast to Rafael Nadal, who loves the backhand, Nadal prefers the forehand. I also like the forehand and hit with more spin than speed.” He can serve at speeds of up to 227 kilometers per hour, making Sock a formidable opponent (141 mph).

A powerful and steady kick serve is one of his strengths. He is also renowned for his ability to sprint around his backhand to unleash booming forehands from the backhand side of the court. He is able to recover many shots and use his forehand, which is his primary weapon from the baseline, more frequently because of his court speed. During the 2015 BNP Paribas Open, Sock violently slid his left foot on the ground as he ran to his forehand, which caused a sock and a shoe to wear holes and drew blood.
