Jack Butland Bio and Career:

English goalie Jack Butland, who was born on March 10, 1993, competes for Premier League team Crystal Palace. Butland was raised in the neighboring town of Clevedon after being born in Southmead, Bristol, where he attended Yeo Moor Primary School and Clevedon Community School.  He began a two-year scholarship in Birmingham City’s youth academy when he graduated from high school in 2009, after having previously played for Clevedon United and the Jamie Shore Academy in Bristol.  Butland was an avid rugby player while he was in school. Butland made his reserve team debut at the age of 16, and in March 2010, he turned 17 and signed a two-and-a-half-year professional contract.  Young Player of the Year for Birmingham City at the conclusion of the 2009–10 campaign, his development was halted in October 2010 by a fractured hand necessitating surgery.

By April of that year, he had recovered sufficiently to be handed a first-team squad number before the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers as a backup in case Ben Foster was hurt or Colin Doyle got sick and couldn’t play. Butland joined League Two club Cheltenham Town on loan for a month soon after making his England under-21 debut in September 2011 in order to experience playing in a first-team setting. Scott Brown, who had made 107 consecutive starts for the team up until that point, was replaced by him when he made his Football League debut against Macclesfield Town at home on September 10, 2011. As Cheltenham won the game 2-0, Butland didn’t have much to do.  While still on loan, Butland re-signed with Birmingham for a deal that would end in June 2015. Later, the initial month was extended by a further two months, to start following his mid-October return from under-21 duty. Butland concluded his loan stint with seven shutouts from his twelve appearances and was named to the League Two Player of the Month shortlist in November.

According to Butland’s Cheltenham colleague Steve Elliot, “Jack’s head is fastened on, he knows what he wants and what he has to do to get there.” Whereas some players lack the mindset needed to succeed, “Jack’s head is fixed on, he knows what he needs to do to get there,” Elliot said. Butland sat on the bench for Birmingham’s final few games of the 2011–12 seasons as the team advanced to the play-off semifinals. Birmingham reportedly rejected a £6 million offer for the midfielder from Southampton, who had just been promoted to the Premier League, over the offseason. Lee Clark, his manager, made it plain that selling him would require a “crazy” offer. For the 2012–13 season, Butland was assigned squad number 1 after Ben Foster left for West Bromwich Albion during the close season . Butland had previously said that he wanted to play regularly for the first team. Three days after making his full England debut, he finally played his first competitive game for Birmingham on the first day of the 2012–13 Football League, a 1–1 draw at home against Charlton Athletic.

Birmingham’s chairman acknowledged that player sales would be required during the transfer season to alleviate the club’s financial problems after a prospective sale of the organization fell through in December. Butland reportedly declined the chance to meet with European champions Chelsea about a potential transfer and informed the squad that he was not willing to go for a club where he would not be playing regular first-team football. Butland’s commitment to the game over “profile and financial rewards,” in Lee Clark’s opinion, demonstrated the player’s “unbelievable maturity” and indicated that Birmingham may have lost “the finest goalkeeper in Europe.”  Butland was selected as Birmingham’s Young Player of the Year despite playing in every league game during the 2012–13 campaign. Butland returned to Cheltenham in February 2012 on a short-term youth loan.
