About (Ivan Lendl– Biography)

He began playing tennis professionally in 1978 and quickly established himself in the sport, winning both the ‘Wimbledon’ and ‘French Open’ juvenile titles for boys in the same year and becoming world number one as a junior player. He continued to have an effect on the game, reaching his first top-level singles final in 1979. In 1980, he won seven singles titles, including three tournament victories in three weeks. In 1981, he added ten additional trophies to his tally, including the first season-ending ‘Masters Grand Prix’ tour title, which he won in five sets over Vitas Gerulaitis.

However, in his first Grand Slam final, he was defeated by Swedish star Björn Borg in the ‘French Open’ that year. He traveled to the United States in 1981 and began living with his instructor and former Polish tennis player, Wojtek Fibak. He won all ten ‘World Championship Tennis’ (‘WCT’) competitions he entered, including the 1982 ‘WCT’ final, which he won in straight sets over John McEnroe. In the 1982 ‘Volvo Masters solo tennis tournament, he defeated McEnroe in straight sets in the ‘Masters Grand Prix’ final, collecting his second season-ending title on that tour. In 1982, he won 15 of the 23 single competitions in which he competed.

He had another chance to win a Grand Slam final that year with the US Open, but he was upset by Jimmy Connors. During his early years, Grand Slam championships appeared to evade him, as he finished second in both the ‘US Open’ and the ‘Australian Open’ in 1983. He won his first Grand Slam title in the ‘French Open’ in 1984, defeating John McEnroe. However, in both the US Open and the Volvo Masters finals that year, he was defeated in straight sets by John McEnroe. In 1986, he defeated Mikael Pernfors to win the ‘French Open,’ and in 1987, he overcame Mats Wilander to take the title.

In 1984, he bought his own home in Greenwich, Connecticut. He applied for and acquired a Permanent Resident Card in the United States in 1987. He intended to compete for the United States in the impending 1988 ‘Olympic Games’ as well as the ‘Davis Cup,’ thus obtaining US citizenship as soon as possible became critical. Finally, on July 7, 1992, he became a United States citizen. In 1985, he defeated John McEnroe in the ‘US Open’ final, and he won it again in 1986 and 1987, defeating Miloslav Me and Mats Wilander, respectively.

He won three consecutive ‘Masters Grand Prix’ events, all ‘Nabisco Masters – Singles,’ including victories over Boris Becker in 1985 and 1986 and Mats Wilander in 1987, for a total of five Grand Prix victories. He won the ‘Australian Open’ for the first time in 1989, defeating Miloslav Me in straight sets. In 1990, as the defending ‘Australian Open’ champion, he regained his championship by defeating Stefan Edberg in straight sets for the second time. He won a total of ten titles in 17 competitions that year.

He had a match-winning percentage of over 90%, which was only surpassed in 2006 by Swiss tennis star Roger Federer. Despite reaching the semi-finals and finals of Wimbledon in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1990, and reaching the finals in 1986 and 1987, he was unable to win the tournament. He announced his retirement from professional tennis on December 21, 1994, due to persistent back discomfort, but it took him three months to make his ultimate choice. He played a few exhibition matches after retiring from professional tennis. He also took up golf, and he now has a 0 handicap. Andy Murray, a Scottish tennis player, was admitted as his coach on December 31, 2011. On March 19, 2014, the duo announced that their coaching collaboration would come to an end.
