Henry Louis Gates Jr. Bio and Career:

Henry Louis Gates Jr. is a well-known literary critic and academic from the United States. He was born on September 16, 1950, in Keyser, West Virginia, and is best recognized for his groundbreaking views about African and African American literature. He first proposed the idea of signifyin’ in order to characterize the history of African and African American literary and artistic expression as an ongoing reflection and reconsideration of what has been accomplished in the past.

His mother, Pauline Coleman Gates, was a house cleaner, while his father, Henry Louis Gates, Sr., worked in a paper mill and also moonlighted as a janitor. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., attended Harvard University. After graduating as the class valedictorian from high school in 1968, Gates went on to get an associate’s degree from a community college in the area before enrolling at Yale University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University in 1973.

After being awarded two fellowships in 1970, he took a leave of absence from Yale in order to travel around Africa. He began his journey in Tanzania, where he worked as an anesthetist in a hospital, and then continued on to other countries in Africa. In 1973, he enrolled in Clare College in Cambridge, England, and one of his lecturers there was the Nigerian author Wole Soyinka. Gates was initially interested in studying history, but Soyinka convinced him to switch to literature instead, and he also educated Gates on the Yoruba culture, which is one of the most prominent in Nigeria.

Gates received his doctorate in English language and literature in 1979 and went on to teach the subject at Yale University, Cornell University, Duke University, and Harvard University. In 1991, he was given the position of W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. In 1980, Mr. Gates accepted a position at Yale as the co-director of the Black Periodical Literature Project. In the years that followed, he earned a reputation as a “literary archaeologist” by recovering and collecting thousands of lost literary works (short stories, poems, reviews, and notices) by African American authors dating from the early 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.

These works ranged in the time period from the early 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. In the early 1980s, Gates rediscovered the first novel written by an African American author, which was Harriet E. Wilson’s Our Nig (1859). He did this by demonstrating that the work was in fact written by an African American woman and not a white man from the North, as was the commonly held belief at the time. This discovery occurred in the early 1980s.  Beginning in the 1980s, Gates served as an editor for a number of critical anthologies of African American literature.

Some of these anthologies include Black Literature and Literary Theory (1984), Bearing Witness: Selections from African American Autobiography in the Twentieth Century (1991), and The Norton Anthology of African American Literature (co-edited with Nellie Y. McKay) (1997). Henry Louis Gates Jr. is a well-known literary critic and academic from the United States.
