Graham Nash Bio and Career:
As a founding member of the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He has witnessed some of rock history’s most important moments, including the beginning of the Laurel Canyon movement and the British Invasion (you can see him on screen in 1967, watching the Beatles perform “All You Need Is Love” on the world stage from Abbey Road Studios).
Nash, a remarkable renaissance artist who received a Grammy Award® and called himself a “simple guy,” was twice admitted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for both his work with CSN and his solo work, starting with two seminal albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales. Graham Nash revisits his first two legendary solo albums in live concert settings recorded in 2019, each in complete with the songs in their familiar order, for his next project, Graham Nash: Live, which will be released on May 6.
A seven-piece band supported him on stage, including Shane Fontayne (guitar and vocals) and Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals), two of Nash’s longest musical partners. The album was mixed by Grammy Award® winner Kevin Killen and mastered by Grammy Award® winner Bob Ludwig. The massive list of songs that Graham Nash has written and added to the soundtrack of our lives for almost six decades stands head and shoulders above almost everything else he has done in his extensive and varied career.
People who appreciate music but don’t create music find the skill of songwriting to be quite strange. I’m not even sure how to adequately express what I feel. I check the news from around the globe, the local newspapers, and what’s happening with my friends, and I write about my life—all I’ve ever done. I get up in the morning, am alive, and go about my day.
With songs like “Stop Stop Stop,” “On A Carousel,” “Carrie Anne,” “King Midas In Reverse,” and “Jennifer Eccles,” among others, Nash contributed to the Hollies’ opus from 1964 to 1968. His extraordinary work has continued up to This Path Tonight (2016), his most recent solo album. In 2018, Over the Years… published a 30-track, 2-CD compilation including Nash’s best-known CSN and post-CSN work, as well as more than a dozen unreleased demos and mixes.
Only twenty months were spent together in the original, iconic Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) band. However, their songs—starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs,” and “Lady Of the Island” from the original Crosby, Stills & Nash album—are lightning bolts ingrained in our DNA (1969). Nash’s renowned songs “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” (for Joni Mitchell) on CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970) pleaded with us to keep love close to ward off the impending lunacy.
Graham Nash Profile-
The two albums mentioned above—his solo debut Songs For Beginners, which included the songs “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness,” and Wild Tales, which was released in 1974 and featured the songs “Prison Song,” “Oh! Camil,” and “You’ll Never Be the Same”—further demonstrated the breadth of Nash’s vocal and lyrical prowess.
Better Days, “I Used To Be A King,” which reframes the Hollies’ “King Midas In Reverse,” and “Simple Man,” which begins, “I am a simple man, so I sing a simple song/ I’ve never been so much in love, and never hurt so bad at the same time,” are three songs on Songs For Beginners that look back on the storied split of Nash and Joni. Another song, “Wounded Bird,” dealt with Stephen Stills’ split with Judy Collins and its effects.
However, “Military Madness” (dedicated to Nash’s parents, who quietly and valiantly raised their children in postwar England) and “Chicago/We Can Change the World,” a request to CSNY bandmates Stills and Young to join him and Crosby at a benefit concert for the defense of the Chicago Eight, “won’t you please come to Chicago/just to sing,” are two chronicles of society’s frayed edges in the Vietnam era that serve
“Sleep Song,” written for his first wife Rose Eccles, the inspiration for “Jennifer Eccles,” and “Man in the Mirror,” written off the coast of Cuba on Crosby’s yacht, the Mayan, during their epic seven-week, 3,000-mile trip from Florida to San Francisco via the Panama Canal, both have autobiographical context. The album Wild Tales from 1974 addressed, among other things, the unjust treatment of Vietnam veterans (“Oh! Camil,” which was inspired by the decorated veteran Scott Camil, who later founded Vietnam Veterans Against the War), and the injustice of celebrity (“You’ll Never Be the Same”).
In his 2013 autobiography, Wild Tales, Nash characterized his second Lp as “a good collection of songs but dark and moody, which was where I was at the time… in a deep emotional hole.” Nash wrote “Grave Concern” in response to the lies and coverups of the Nixon/Watergate investigations, “outraged that the administration’s leaders were lying to the American people and screwing with the Constitution.”
While Nash’s solo recordings throughout the next decades will live in their own time and place, they will also, in some ways, be influenced by the three dynamic musicians who made up CSNY. Before Nash’s Wild Tales, the most tenacious, enduring, and fruitful collaboration to come out of the CSNY camp was introduced with the self-titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972) album, which was bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” as the opening track and “Immigration Man” as the closing track. On their back-to-back Lps, Wind On the Water (1975) and Whistling Down the Wire, the pair made more contributions to the soundtrack (1976).
On the CSN reunion studio album from 1977, Nash’s performance of “Just A Song Before I Go” was the best (written in one hour and a Top 10 hit single). Lightning struck again on CSN’s Daylight Again (1982) when Nash wrote “Wasted On the Way,” the band’s second (and last) Top 10 success, lamenting the energy, time, and love the group had squandered over years of internal conflicts. The group would release five more record projects up to the most recent CSN 2012 live double-CD/DVD set.
Nash’s fervent advocacy for social and environmental justice and peace are often heard. Together with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, he planned the No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts in 1979, which are now regarded as landmark charity performances. In 2011, Nash played a crucial role in reviving MUSE with a performance to support organizations supporting non-nuclear energy globally and disaster relief in Japan. He and Crosby were among the numerous artists that attended the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in lower Manhattan that year.
