Geoffrey Zakarian Bio and Career:
Geoffrey Zakarian, an American chef, restaurateur, television personality, and author was born on July 25, 1959. He serves as the executive chef at a number of establishments in Miami, Atlantic City, and New York City. He appears on a number of Food Network television shows, such as Chopped and The Next Iron Chef, where he gained the privilege to compete on Iron Chef America in 2011. In Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 25, 1959, Zakarian was born to Polish-American mother Viola and musician father George Zakarian, who is of Armenian descent.
Virginia is his sister, while George is his brother. In 1977, he earned his high school diploma from Burncoat. After graduating from Worcester State University with a degree in economics, he moved to France and made the decision to become a chef. In 1990, he was appointed executive chef at 44, a midtown Manhattan restaurant at the Royalton Hotel that The New York Times called “trendy” and “elegant.” Zakarian was cited as “the reason that 44 in the Royalton Hotel was always a lot better than it needed to be” by William Grimes, an additional contributor to The New York Times, in 2001.
[Reference required] Bryan Miller, a writer for The New York Times, had only given 44 two stars back in 1992. In response to a class action lawsuit brought by his former workers, Zakarian declared bankruptcy in the spring of 2011. He was accused of breaking labor regulations by the workers, who then filed a lawsuit for back pay. The employees’ assertions were backed by two of Zakarian’s restaurant partners, although Zakarian’s spokesman refuted them.
An out-of-court settlement was reached. Since the start of the Chopped series on the Food Network, he has made numerous appearances as a judge alongside fellow chefs Scott Conant, Chris Santos, Aarón Sánchez, Amanda Freitag, Marcus Samuelsson, Marc Murphy, Maneet Chauhan, and Alex Guarnaschelli. He has also made numerous appearances as a judge on the network’s 24-Hour Restaurant Battle series.
He has also been in Hell’s Kitchen and served as a judge on Top Chef. In May 2010, Zakarian participated in Iron Chef America as a challenger. He fought Masaharu Morimoto and lost, 57 to 43. In the season finale of The Next Iron Chef, Zakarian defeated Elizabeth Falkner to claim the title of champion in December 2011. Along with Sunny Anderson, Jeff Mauro, Katie Lee, Marcela Valladolid, and Sunny Zakarian, Zakarian started hosting The Kitchen on the Food Network in January 2014.
Additionally, Zakarian has been on Cutthroat Kitchen as both a competitor and judge. He started hosting the Food Network program Cooks vs. Cons in 2016, where judges attempt to discern whether a winning meal was prepared by a chef or a home cook. In 2005, Zakarian wed marketing executive Margaret Anne Williams. They have a son named George and two daughters named Anna and Madeline. He was previously married for around ten years to Heather Karaman.
Zakarian describes himself as a libertarian and has been a longtime subscriber to Reason. Geoffrey Zakarian’s Town / Country, his debut novel, was published in the spring of 2006. According to Amanda Hesser, a writer for The New York Times, it was “one of the greatest of 2006.” 150 recipes are included in the book for “Life Around the Table” with loved ones and friends.
He serves as the chairman of the City Harvest Food Council, a group that rescues food and works to end hunger in New York City. He graduated with an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, to start his culinary profession. He started working as a chef trainee for Daniel Boulud at Le Cirque, where he held the title of “Chef de Cuisine” from 1982 until 1987.
Awards:
Following Donald Trump’s contentious remarks regarding illegal immigrants in July 2015, Zakarian resigned from a proposed American-style concept restaurant named The National at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. According to Zakarian, Trump’s comments “do not in any way match with my own basic convictions.” “My family and I are immigrants, just as we are a country.” Zakarian was anticipating forfeiting a $500,000 leasing deposit. In August 2015, Trump filed a lawsuit against Zakarian seeking “in excess of $10 million” for missed rent and other damages. In April 2017, an out-of-court settlement was reached.
Together with David Brody of Z100 WHTZ, he was recruited in 1996 to manage Old Navy’s disastrous coffee bar and coffee cart operation. Later, he started working at the Blue Door at the Delano Hotel in Miami’s South Beach. He was appointed executive chef at Manhattan’s Patroon in 1998, which Ruth Reichl of the New York Times rated 3 stars. In the spring of 2000, Zakarian collaborated with famous French chef Alain Passard at the three-Michelin-star Arpège restaurant in Paris.
