Earl Sweatshirt Bio and Career:
Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, commonly known by his stage name Earl Sweatshirt, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He was born on February 24, 1994. When Kgositsile started rapping in 2008, he went by the stage name Sly Tendencies. However, when Tyler, the Creator offered him to join his alternative hip hop group Odd Future in late 2009, he quickly changed his name. Kgositsile contacted Tyler, the Creator in 2009 to let him know he was a fan of his music, and Tyler, the Creator later found Kgositsile through Tyler’s MySpace account.
Later, Kgositsile adopted the alias Earl Sweatshirt and eventually became a member of Tyler’s rap crew Odd Future. When a video of Kgositsile appeared on YouTube with a sneak peek of a new song and a request for 50,000 Twitter followers, it sparked online suspicions that he had moved back to the United States on February 8, 2012. Later, he sent a confirmation to his new Twitter account saying he had really gone back to his Los Angeles residence.
The song “Oldie” from Odd Future’s debut album The OF Tape Vol. 2 features Kgositsile. This marked Earl’s first appearance on an Odd Future Records record as well as his return to official Odd Future releases. Kgositsile was seen rapping along to his verse from “Oldie” with the other members of the crew in a music video that was published on the official Odd Future YouTube website on March 20. Kgositsile performed with the group on March 20, 2012, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
Rapper Casey Veggies issued a mixtape named Customized Greatly 3 on April 9, 2012, which contained the song “PNCINTLOFWGKTA” with Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Domo Genesis, and Hodgy Beats. In the same month, Kgositsile agreed to partner with Columbia Records to launch his own record label, Tan Cressida. Due to his aim of staying connected to Odd Future, he declined the number of other, more substantial offers.
The song “Super Rich Kids” from Frank Ocean’s debut album, channel ORANGE, which was made available digitally on July 10, 2012, features Earl Sweatshirt. The debut song from Domo Genesis & The Alchemist’s collaborative album No Idols, “Elimination Chamber,” which included Earl, Vince Staples, and Action Bronson, was made available on July 16.
He later appeared on the record once more in the songs “Gamebreaker” and “Daily News,” which also included SpaceGhostPurrp & Action Bronson. Earl Sweatshirt and Captain Murphy are featured in the Flying Lotus song “Between Friends,” which was released as part of the Adult Swim Singles series on July 23, 2012. On the song, “P2” from MellowHype’s second and last studio album, Numbers, Earl Sweatshirt also appears.
Though Kgositsile later claimed in an interview that his mother sent him to Samoa as a result of getting into trouble with friends, posts from Tyler, the Creator’s Twitter and Formspring accounts appeared to indicate that Kgositsile’s mother would not give permission to release any of her son’s music. Outside of Apia, the capital of Samoa, Kgositsile attended Coral Reef Academy, a therapeutic retreat school for boys who are at risk. Kgositsile worked hard at Coral Reef Academy to regain his rights and the chance to go home.
He was not allowed to use the restroom unattended when he first enrolled. While there, he read counterculture fiction by Richard Faria and the biography of Malcolm X by Manning Marable. He composed lines, the majority of which can be found on “Oldie,” the lone song he contributed to The OF Tape Vol. 2 by Odd Future. Leila Steinberg, who served as Tupac Shakur’s initial manager and is currently in charge of his career, brought Kgositsile back from Samoa.
A post on Odd Future’s Tumblr inspired the “Free Earl” movement, which was born out of Kgositsile’s musical hiatus. At the group’s performances, the phrase would be chanted and would feature in various songs by both the collective and its individual members, sparking media attention to the cause.
In March 2010, while he was just 16 years old, he released his debut mixtape, Earl, to tremendous acclaim. His mother moved him to a Samoan boarding school for at-risk teenagers for a year and a half shortly after its publication. During his time there, he was unable to record any music, but in February 2012—a few months before he turned eighteen—he moved back to Los Angeles. Kgositsile re-joined Odd Future continued making music, and in August 2013 he released his first studio album, Doris.
His third album, Some Rap Songs, was released in November 2018. His second, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, was published in March 2015. All of his works have garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews. His independent label Tan Cressida, which was once distributed by Columbia Records, is where he is currently signed. Kgositsile published an EP named Feet of Clay on November 1st, 2019.

Kgositsile made the announcement that the album would now go by the name Doris on December 4. The “Chum” music video was uploaded to YouTube the same day. Earl was ranked by Complex as the 24th-best album of 2010. Despite enthusiastic responses from both reviewers and fans, a number of sites claimed that Kgositsile had stopped recording with Odd Future.
