Catherine Corless Bio and Career:

Irish historian Catherine Corless is well-known for her work collating data pertaining to infant fatalities at the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Galway. Corless made the decision to write an essay on the mother and baby home after becoming interested in local history while taking an evening course. Her memories of the facility from her own youth served as inspiration. She spent her free time looking through documents at libraries, churches, and council offices. She found that 796 children had passed away at the home and discovered that there were death certificates but no burial records.

She has been honored with many accolades for her efforts, including a People of the Year Award in 2018. Corless was dubbed a “tireless warrior of decency and truth” by Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin after the 2020 government report on deaths and abuses at Mother and Baby shelters. The editors of the local history magazine were delighted with her writing when she contributed a piece about landlords to the journal, and they asked if she would think about submitting another item. Her interest in the subject was motivated by her own experiences of the children’s home and going to school with kids from the home.  Corless has said several times how she regrets a prank she once pulled on one of the kids from the home.

She imitated a classmate by wrapping a stone in a candy wrapper and handing it to a girl who took it believing it was a reward. In an effort to raise money for a bigger monument at the site, Corless first contacted the local media with the findings of her studies in 2013. However, only a brief story was written. This was followed by another article in the Connacht Tribune in February 2014 that focused again on the need for a monument with the names of the deceased children to be erected at the scene.

She persisted with her investigation, speaking with other individuals who had been born in the house or who believed relatives may be buried there. For her findings, Corless has drawn flak. Many residents, according to what she has said, felt that the situation should have been left alone.  She also said that she had been instructed to stop her study and “just leave them there” in regard to the remains.

Mary Moriarty, a local, also heard people say that the situation should be left alone.  Corless claims that the Bon Secours headquarters in Cork contacted her after the story made national news and informed her that she had angered the more senior Religious sisters and that her information was false. Corless has advocated for the exhumation of the mass burial in Tuam on several occasions. She remarked, “The ideal would be to exhume those young remains and simply show them some respect and regard and to maybe reinter them in the main Tuam cemetery which is just over the road,” in a speech she gave in 2017 after collecting a Human Rights Award for her efforts.

She criticized the Galway County Council’s approach to public input on the site’s future and urged the general public to support a complete forensic investigation, saying it would “deliver the long-awaited justice to the families of the infants buried in this tank.”  In April 2018, after receiving her Person of the Year Award, she brought up the subject once again. Corless criticized the idea that the site’s possible future alternatives were influenced by money “Some people have suggested memorializing the location, but I don’t believe that’s appropriate or respectable.

Now, a thorough exhumation is required. It is not a place for these innocent children’s bodies, therefore we must remove them and give them a dignified funeral. For each of the participating families, it would contribute to their journey of recovery. Money is the only thing preventing a complete exhumation, and that is not good enough.” [23]Corless declined a request to attend a luncheon honoring Pope Francis’s visit to Ireland in favor of a vigil staged in conjunction with the papal mass, saying she was “taking a stance with the babies.”

In response to her letter in 2020 asking for the reinternment of the bones, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, the Pope’s envoy to Ireland, said that he agreed with the Archbishop of Tuam and believed that the remains should be given a respectable reinternment.

Following this declaration, Corless made a number of more media appearances. In March 2017, she spoke about her findings during an appearance on The Late Late Show.  When the interview was over, the crowd gave her a standing ovation.  Additionally, she was highlighted in episodes of Profile on BBC Radio 4 and PM in 2018 in a piece dubbed The Home Babies.

The narrative of Julia Carter Devaney, who spent her first 45 years of life in the Tuam mother and infant home, was told by Corless in the 2018 RTÉ documentary No Country for Women. She spoke at the Galway International Arts Festival in July 2018. Corless discovered that there had been very little published on the mother and baby home and that her piece would take a great deal of study.

She began by speaking with residents of the estate that was created on the site of the house, and she was shown the location of a mass grave that the inhabitants said contained starvation victims. Corless then looked at Ordnance Survey maps of the region, which showed that in 1890 the grave’s location was a septic tank.  She sought the Bon Secours for information but received nothing helpful.

After obtaining death certificates for some of the kids in the house, Corless discovered there was no mention of where the kids had been buried. She produced a story for the neighborhood newspaper that covered every detail of the house and ended it with the query, “Had the murdered kids been buried in the septic tanks?”

Corless conducted more investigation into the number of children who had died in the facility when her piece failed to get the attention she anticipated from the authorities. She was able to get 798 death records for kids who passed away at home between 2011 and 2013 by paying 4 euros for each record, but she was unable to acquire any burial data.

It was widely reported that Corless had been vindicated by the findings of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation, which found that the dead in the mass grave at the site of the home did indeed date from the period the care was open and were not hunger victims.

Her spouse said that he had no idea there was such controversy around Catherine Corless’ research findings. The Irish Mail on Sunday featured the story on its top page when it first broke nationwide in 2014.

Corless then discovered that she was being contacted by the foreign media often. Some of the speculations in the papers, such as the assertion that every kid who passed away at the house was buried in the septic tank, apparently infuriated Corless.

In 2017, a Commission of Investigation came to the conclusion that child remains from deaths that occurred while the mother and baby home were in operation were found in what seemed to be a septic tank-like subsurface structure on the property.
