Brian Cox Bio and Career:
British physicist and University of Manchester particle physics professor Brian Edward Cox was once a pop darling and now is revered in the scientific community. It has been said of him, “pop idols become science idols.” Mostly due to his time spent hosting science shows on the BBC, he has gained widespread notoriety (BBC). Through these programs, he has become known for introducing more people to the fascinating world of science, especially in the areas of physics and astronomy.
On March 3, 1968, Brian Edward Cox entered the world. Both of his parents worked as bankers. His childhood in Oldham was wonderful, and he found enjoyment in a wide variety of activities, from gymnastics to dance to simply sitting on the curb and watching the airplanes and buses go by. It was a book he read when he was twelve that inspired him to study physics. Carl Sagan authored it in 1980 under the title “Cosmos.” The series had 13 episodes and was based on a hit TV show of the same name.
Brian received his primary and secondary school between the years of 1979 and 1986 at the prestigious Hulme Grammar School, a private institution. Brian received a failing mark (D) on his Advanced Placement mathematics exam due to his lackluster performance. Brian was troubled by his poor performance and resolved to raise his math competency via hard work and dedication. He attributed his weak math performance to two things: first, the time obligations involved with his fledgling band, and second, his general indifference in the topic.
Brian played the keyboard for the pop bands Dare and Dream in the ’80s and ’90s. Making music was a hobby of his. At the age of 23, Cox enrolled in college to pursue a degree in science. Thankfully, he was still accepted to college despite his poor performance in math on the A Level. At the time, he was trying to strike a compromise between his academic and musical ambitions; in 1994, his band Dream enjoyed chart success with the tune Things Can Only Get Better.
At the University of Manchester, where he studied until 1997, Cox earned a physics degree with the highest honors. In the same year, he and his pop band Dream split up. Dr. Cox received his Ph.D. in high-energy particle physics from the University of Manchester back in 1998. Robin Marshall directed his presentation of a thesis titled “Double Diffraction Dissociation at Large Momentum Transfer,” which she oversaw.
Cox got his start in the music business in the ’80s and ’90s as a keyboard player for a number of popular bands. His meteoric climb to stardom began at this point. After that, he set his sights on a career in the natural sciences. In 2005, Cox was promoted to the position of professor of particle physics at Manchester University, where he has remained ever since. He worked as a Royal Society University Research Fellow from 2005 until 2013.
