Brad Meltzer Bio and Career:

American novelist, non-fiction author, TV program developer, and creator of comic books Brad Meltzer was born on April 1, 1970. He has authored superhero fiction for DC Comics and a number of brief biographies of well-known personalities for young readers. His works touch on the political thriller, legal thriller, and conspiracy fiction genres. Meltzer and fellow comic book writer/artist Judd Winick shared an apartment on Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1993, and Winick worked in sales at Games magazine during the day while Meltzer worked on his first book at night. Following his graduation from Columbia Law School.

Meltzer has also had books published in other genres, including poetry. Meltzer has collaborated with various groups in Florida to promote literacy there. Meltzer has previously collaborated with Florida Family Literacy Initiative and will take part in the 23rd Annual Love of Literacy Luncheon of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County in March 2014. His first book, Fraternity, had 24 rejection letters, but while he was still in law school, he sold his second book, The Tenth Justice.  He co-wrote the first AmeriCorps member swearing-in oath in 1994, which was spoken by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

For The Tenth Justice, his first book, Meltzer built one of the first author websites in 1996. Every single one of Meltzer’s novels has achieved bestseller status with The New York Times, and The Hollywood Reporter named him one of “Hollywood’s Most Powerful Authors” throughout the years. Heroes For My Son, which Meltzer had been working on for more than a decade, starting the night his first son was born, was published in May 2010 and was his first nonfiction book. The book is one of two that Meltzer’s publisher is releasing.

He mentioned working on Heroes for My Daughter in an interview from May 2010. The book was created with the goal of one day being given to his son, who was then eight years old and is a compilation of tales from the lives of 52 individuals, including Jim Henson, Rosa Parks, and Mr. Rogers. On The New York Times Best Seller list, it opened at number two.  The New York Times bestseller list included Heroes for My Daughter as well.

I Am Am Amelia Earhart and I Am Abraham Lincoln, two children’s biographies that Meltzer and illustrator Chris Eliopoulos introduced in January 2014 and debuted on The New York Times bestseller list, were the first in the series. The novels are a part of the series Ordinary People Change the World, whose books engage young readers by entertainingly recounting the lives of American icons.

I Am Rosa Parks, I Am Lucille Ball, I Am Jackie Robinson, I Am Helen Keller, I Am Martin Luther King, Jr., I Am Jane Goodall, I Am George Washington, and I Am Jim Henson were the novels that came after the first ones. I Am Gandhi and I Am Sacagawea were then published in October 2017.  Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, an animated version of the series that debuts in November 2019, was announced by PBS in October 2018.

The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington, which Meltzer co-wrote with Josh Mensch, was published in January 2019. George H. W. Bush offered Meltzer a copy of the covert letter he had left for Bill Clinton on the desk in the Oval Office when Meltzer was gathering research for his 2011 book The Inner Circle.

On the 15th anniversary of 9/11, Meltzer was also instrumental in trying to locate the lost 9/11 flag that the firemen had erected at Ground Zero at the World Trade Center site. Brad Meltzer used his television program, Lost History, to tell the tale of the flag’s disappearance and to solicit support from the populace in getting it back. Four days later, a former Marine entered an Everett, Washington, fire department and said that he had seen Meltzer’s television program and now wanted to return the flag. The flag was unfurled by Meltzer and is currently on display at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York.

Meltzer, who is renowned for doing exhaustive research, has received assistance from former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, both of whom are admirers. Bush delivered Brad the covert letter he left for President Bill Clinton on the Oval Office desk while Brad was doing research. Meltzer took part in a workgroup in September 2006 that included the CIA, the FBI, a number of psychiatrists, and Department of Homeland Security intelligence personnel to come up with fresh ideas for terrorist attacks on the United States.

Meltzer is a motivational speaker whose “How to Write Your Own Obituary” TEDx Talk, which has had over 50,000 views, led TED to urge him to do another TED Talk, “Write Your Story, Change History,” which has received over 80,000 views. Meltzer helped establish the Siegel & Shuster Society, told the tale of the house, and organized an auction that earned more than $100,000 in order to preserve the Cleveland, Ohio, home where Superman was first conceived.
