About (Billie Jean King– Biography)

From a young age, King showed a natural aptitude for sports. She gained public notice for the first time in 1961 when she and Karen Hantz won the Wimbledon doubles championship, becoming the youngest combination to do so at the time. After that, she went on to win a record 20 Wimbledon titles (singles in 1966–68, 1972–73, and 1975; women’s doubles in 1961–62, 1965, 1967–68, 1970–73, and 1979; and mixed doubles in 1967, 1971, and 1973–74), as well as the United States singles titles in 1967, 1971–72, and 1974,

With her triumphs in 1967, she became the first woman since 1938 to win the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles in the United States and the United Kingdom in the same year. After turning professional in 1968, King made history by being the first female athlete to win more than $100,000 in a single season (1971). It was in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” match in 1973 that she defeated the aged Bobby Riggs. The match broke the previous records for the greatest tennis audience and the most prize money granted in tennis history.

She campaigned tirelessly for the rights of female players, assisted in the formation of a distinct women’s tour, and received financial support from commercial sponsors, among other things. She was one of the founding members of the Women’s Tennis Association and served as its first president (1974). In 1974, King and her husband, Larry King (whom she married in 1965 and died in 1987), were among a group of people that came together to form World TeamTennis (WTT).

With her service as the Philadelphia Freedoms player coach, King made history by becoming one of the first women to coach professional male players in the United States. The WTT was forced to close its doors in 1978 due to financial problems, but King brought the tournament back to life in 1981. In the same year, King acknowledged having a gay romance with her former secretary, who was suing King for financial support at the time of her admission. (Her secretary was unsuccessful in the lawsuit.)

Consequently, King became the most well-known female athlete to have come out as a lesbian at the time, but she was later fired from all of her endorsement deals as a result of her decision. Following her divorce from Larry King, she came out publicly as a gay woman and became an advocate for LGBT rights. King resigned from competitive tennis in 1984 and, the following year was appointed as the World TeamTennis League’s first female commissioner, making her the first woman to hold such a position in professional sports.

In 1980, she was inducted into the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, in 1987, she was admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and in 1990, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. King remains active in tennis and has acted as a coach for various Olympic and Federation Cup teams since the mid-1990s; in 2020, the Federation Cup will be renamed the Billie Jean King Cup in honor of the tennis legend.

The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was dedicated to King by the United States Tennis Association in August 2006, the same year the National Tennis Center, which serves as the site of the U.S. Open, was renamed in her honor. Billie Jean (1974; co-authored with Kim Chapin), The Autobiography of Billie Jean King (1982; co-authored with Frank Deford), and All In (1993; co-authored with Frank Deford) are among her autobiographies (2021; with Johnette Howard and Maryanne Vollers). Some of her other books are We Have Come a Long Way: The Story of Women’s Tennis (1988; co-authored with Cynthia Starr) and Pressure Is a Privilege: Lessons I’ve Learned from Life and the Battle of the Sexes: Lessons I’ve Learned from Life and the Battle of the Sexes (2001). (2008; with Christine Brennan).
