For 12 days, the ECMO machine performed the functions of her heart and lungs. They also performed dialysis because her kidneys were failing and plasmapheresis because her bloodstream was so polluted from the septic shock. She was in the hospital for 80 days, from February 2 to April 24, 2012, with about six weeks in the PICU. She had numerous procedures and surgeries, and she was still on dialysis when she returned home. Her parents had to take her to the hospital three times a week for hemodialysis because her kidneys were still failing.
She eventually had another procedure to insert a dialysis tube into her abdomen to allow for Peritoneal dialysis. This dialysis could be done at home seven days a week.
