Amy Tan Bio and Career:

Amy Ruth Tan is an American novelist who was born on February 19, 1952. She is most known for her novel The Joy Luck Club, which was made into a movie with the same name, as well as her other books for children, short story collections, and other genres. Oakland, California, is where Tan was born. She is the second of Chinese immigrants John and Daisy Tan’s three children. Her father, a Baptist minister and electrical engineer emigrated to the United States to flee the chaos of the Chinese Civil War.

Tan spent one year studying at Marian A. Peterson High School in Sunnyvale. Her father and older brother Peter passed away from brain tumors when she was fifteen, six months apart. Before beginning a writing career, Tan took various jobs while still in school, including those as a switchboard operator, carhop, bartender, and pizza maker. She wrote for AT&T, IBM, Bank of America, and Pacific Bell as a freelance business writer while using non-Chinese-sounding aliases.

Tan started writing her first book, The Joy Luck Club, while she was employed as a business writer. To polish her first draught, Tan enrolled in the Squaw Valley Program. She submitted an excerpt from the draught novel to the workshop under the title “Endgame.” Tan was encouraged to submit some of her writing to periodicals by author Molly Giles, who was instructing at the workshop. Tan’s stories, taken from the Joy Luck Club manuscript, were published by FM Magazine and Seventeen, while one was turned down by the New Yorker. Before sending the draught novel manuscript, Tan released a number of other sections of the book as short tales with the help of agent Sandra Dijkstra.

She turned down offers from numerous prestigious publishing houses, including A.A. Knopf, Vintage, Harper & Row, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Simon and Schuster, and Putnam Books, since their pay was deemed inadequate by her and her agent. In the end, she agreed to a second offer from Putnam Books in December 1987 for $50,000.  The Joy Luck Club is a collection of eight interconnected tales concerning the lives of four mother-daughter Chinese-American pairings.

The Kitchen God’s Wife, Tan’s second book, also centers on the bond between an immigrant Chinese mother and her American-born daughter. The Hundred Secret Senses, Tan’s third book, deviates from his first two books in that it focuses on the connections between sisters. Tan was partially inspired by one of the half-siblings he sponsored to immigrate to the US. The Bonesetter’s Daughter, Tan’s fourth book, revisits the subject of an immigrant Chinese lady and her American-born daughter.

Tan played the second tambourine, backing vocals, and “lead rhythm dominatrix” for the literary garage band Rock Bottom Remainders. The band had raised more than a million dollars for reading projects before it stopped traveling. In “Insane Clown Poppy,” The Simpsons’ third episode of Season 12, Tan made an appearance playing herself.

Tan’s writing has been translated into a variety of mediums. In 1993, the book The Joy Luck Club was turned into a play. The same year, Wayne Wang turned the book into a movie. An operatic version of The Bonesetter’s Daughter was created in 2008.  Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat, a children’s book by Tan, was turned into an animated PBS television program with the same name.

After Tan left Linfield College in Oregon, the Baptist school her mother had chosen for her, to follow her lover to San Jose City College in California, the two did not talk for six months. Tan went on a blind date with him and was married to him in 1974. Tan later graduated from San José State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and linguistics. She studied linguistics for her doctorate at the Universities of California, Berkeley, and Santa Cruz.

The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter’s Daughter, Saving Fish from Drowning, and The Valley of Amazement are just a few of Tan’s other books. Where The Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir is Tan’s most recent memoir. Along with these, Tan also wrote two children’s novels, Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat, which was adapted into an animated series that was broadcast on PBS, and The Moon Lady.

Amy later relocated to Switzerland with her younger brother, John Jr., thanks to Daisy, where she completed her high school education at the Institut Monte Rosa, Montreux.  During this time, Amy discovered that her mother had previously been married to a different man in China. She also learned about their four children—a son who passed away as a toddler and three daughters—and how her mother had abandoned them in Shanghai. This occurrence served as the inspiration for Tan’s debut book, The Joy Luck Club. Amy went to China in 1987 with Daisy to meet her three half-sisters.

Tan and her mother did not get along well. When Daisy and Amy were bickering about Amy’s new boyfriend, Daisy threatened to slit Amy’s throat with a knife. Tan’s mother emphasized that Tan needed to make sure she was self-sufficient and wished for her to be independent. Tan later learned that when her mother was in China, she had three abortions. Daisy frequently expressed her desire to follow her mother, Tan’s grandmother, who also committed suicide, by taking her own life. She made several unsuccessful suicide attempts.
