Rakim Athelaston Mayers, also known as ASAP Rocky, is an American rapper, music producer, and record executive. He was born on October 3, 1988. He began his musical career as a member of the hip-hop group ASAP Mob, from which he took his stage name. He was born and raised in Harlem. Rocky revealed to MTV News on June 21 that he had finished his debut instrumental album, titled Beauty & The Beast: Slowed Down Sessions (Chapter 1), which is primarily composed of ambient-oriented instrumental tracks and was initially planned to be made available for free download during the summer. But there was no announced release date for the record, which was delayed. Rocky played two samples, “Riot Rave” and “Unicorn,” that would have appeared on the Beauty & The Beast: Slowed Down Sessions compilation.  As of 2022, the project has not been made public.

At the age of nine, Mayers relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and began rapping. His older brother, who also sported the Cornrows hairstyle that A$AP Rocky eventually adopted, taught him how to rap. When Mayers was 12 years old, his father was arrested for drug sales. He later passed away in 2012. Mayers’ brother was killed in Harlem when he was 13 years old. Rocky was motivated to take rapping more seriously by the death.
